2024 BMW X6 Review
byKurt NiebuhrSenior Vehicle Test EditorKurt Niebuhr has worked in the automotive industry since 2005. A automotive photographer by trade, Kurt is now one of zzdcar' high-performance test drivers. He's driven and photographed hundreds, if not thousands, of vehicles all over the world, so Kurt's library of automotive experiences would certainly make for a good book. When not dreaming about getting his racing license or trying to buy out-of-date film for his cameras, Kurt can usually be found cursing at his 1966 Mustang.
As the founding member of the coupe-like SUV genre, the midsize BMW X6 exists to elevate form over function. Its signature sloping roofline gives it a sportier look than the related BMW X5, though it comes at the expense of cargo space. For 2024, the X6 gets a refresh complete with revised exterior styling, new interior tech, which includes a new curved digital display, and more powerful engines.

zzdcar spotlight: More powerful six-cylinder engine
For 2024, BMW has redesigned the X6's six-cylinder engine giving it as much power as V8 engines enjoyed only a few years ago. The turbocharged inline-six cylinder engine is now making 375 horsepower and a max 398 lb-ft of torque. That's a significant bump of 40 hp and 66 lb-ft over last year's model and makes the six-cylinder a much more attractive option, even for buyers who value strong straight-line performance. As a bonus, there's a mild hybrid system to add a bit of efficiency and additional smoothness to the whole experience.
Competitors to consider
The BMW X6’s chief rival remains the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe, which also received a refresh for the 2024 model year. Like the BMW, the GLE packs in plenty of luxury features along with similar more svelte exterior design. The Audi Q8 also fits the bill and, with its less rakish profile than the X6, provides a more usable back seat and better visibility.
Which X6 does zzdcar recommend?
As tempting as the optional turbocharged V8 is, we'd put our money into xDrive40i. We find the redesigned inline six-cylinder engine to be plenty powerful. As for options, consider getting the Executive package for the panoramic roof and upgraded sound system and the Climate Control package for the four-zone climate control and ventilated front seats.
