What's new for the 2025 BMW M5?
We expect a new generation of the M5 will launch for the 2025 model year. As before, it will be the high-performance version of the 5 Series midsize luxury sedan. BMW will be redesigning the 5 Series for 2024. Traditionally, BMW puts the M5 on a one-year hiatus between generations, which is why we think this new M5 will come out for the 2025 model year.
What will power the new M5?
Based on available information, it seems as though the 2025 BMW M5 will come with a similar powertrain found in the high-performance XM SUV. This is a plug-in hybrid powertrain that is based on a turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine. In the XM, this powertrain makes 644 horsepower and delivers its power to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. The larger XM can go about 30 miles on all-electric power, and we expect the M5 to easily beat that if it has a similar battery size. Some rather optimistic predictions point to 60 miles.
zzdcar says
Lots of questions remain about the new 2025 BMW M5. We're not particularly impressed with the XM, but if its powertrain does indeed end up in the lighter and lower M5, it could be a good combination. We're still a long way off from what we expect will be a summer 2024 launch, so keep checking back with zzdcar for the latest updates.
