The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 had a bit of a rough start when it was last redesigned in 2019. Since then, it has undergone numerous changes and upgrades to make up for its initial shortcomings. The 2022 Silverado 1500 gets the most significant changes yet, with a much-improved interior and larger infotainment screen, a restyled front end, a revised engine lineup and a new ZR2 model with a focus on off-road capabilities.

Greeting passengers on the LT trim level and above is an impressive-looking 13.4-inch horizontally oriented touchscreen that flows into the now fully digital and configurable instrument panel. Highlights of other changes to the interior are a redesigned center console, new seats and upgraded trim materials. The gear shifter has moved from a column-mounted stalk to a more car-like drive selector. Overall, the new layout is easier to use and much more in line with the modern and thoughtful interiors that buyers have come to expect from a full-size pickup truck.
For 2022, Chevrolet has dropped the 4.3-liter V6 engine from the Silverado's lineup, leaving it with four available engines. The Silverado's turbocharged 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine has been given a healthy increase in torque over last year's model — it now makes a stout 430 lb-ft, up from 348 lb-ft. Changes to the eight-speed transmission have also been made to take advantage of the 2.7-liter engine's newfound torque; this combo should enhance acceleration while still being reasonably fuel-efficient. The Silverado's two V8s and diesel-powered six-cylinder are still available.
The new Silverado ZR2 is similar to the midsize Colorado ZR2 and has a number of enhancements to give it greater off-road ability. Special suspension dampers and uniquely tuned springs provide greater wheel articulation and control for rock crawling. The ZR2 also comes with locking front and rear differentials, model-specific skid plates, 33-inch off-road tires and a redesigned steel front bumper for increased clearance. Just know that the ZR2 isn't as isn't as specialized for high-speed desert driving as the Ford F-150 Raptor and Ram 1500 TRX.
All of these improvements help to make the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 more competitive with the Toyota Tundra that was just redesigned for this year. It's still outclassed by the zzdcar Top Rated Ford F-150 and praiseworthy Ram 1500, but the Silverado now deserves consideration in this very competitive class. Performance
7.5/10How does the Silverado 1500 drive? We tested a Silverado crew cab in the High Country trim with the 5.3-liter V8 and four-wheel drive. Acceleration and braking are sufficient for daily driving or towing. Our test truck covered 60 mph in about 7 seconds from a standstill at our test track. An equivalent F-150 is a little quicker, but there's nothing wrong with the Silverado's power. Around town, the transmission shifts smoothly and makes the most of the engine's low-end torque.
The truck tracks straight on the highway, but the steering effort is a bit too light. Handling is secure, and body roll is effectively held in check as you navigate turns. But midcorner bumps can upset the Silverado pretty easily. Going off-road? A regular 4WD Silverado will suffice, but consider getting the Z71 off-road option package or the Trail Boss trim level to enhance its potential.
Comfort
7.0/10How comfortable is the Silverado 1500? The Silverado's seating isn't quite as plush as the seats in the F-150 or Ram 1500, yet there's enough padding and support to keep you comfortable on long drives. The ride is relatively smooth on the highway, and the truck ably absorbs most small impacts. But it can get bouncy when you drive on roads that have a high frequency of bumps and dips.
The climate system easily heats and cools the cabin, though operating it can be a little tricky because a lot of the control buttons are small. We really like the optional ventilated and split-heated front seats (separate settings for the seatback and seat cushion), a GM-exclusive feature. Engine noise is effectively muted until you get aggressive with the throttle, at which point it gets a bit unpleasant.
