If you ever find yourself with the need to tow something as heavy as a Greyhound bus, your vehicle choices are very limited. There are only four heavy-duty pickup trucks up to that task, though it's worth noting that a commercial driver's license is required for loads over 26,000 pounds. The 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD maxes out at 36,000 pounds, which is wildly impressive on its own, but it's overshadowed by rivals that can pull just a bit more.

This year, the Silverado 3500HD's changes include new power-operated towing mirrors and not much else, leaving it to bring up the rear in the heavy-duty truck class. The 3500HD is further handicapped by an interior that looks older and is less appealing than the cabins of the competition. With a new Ford F-350 Super Duty hitting the market this year, the big Chevy is in need of more substantial updates to stay relevant.
As a result, we recommend checking out that new Ford F-350 as well as the returning Ram 3500 before committing to the Silverado 3500HD. Both competitors are more capable when it comes to towing and their interiors are significantly more appealing. The related GMC Sierra 3500HD also has a better interior, but its capabilities match the Silverado's. With any luck, perhaps we'll get an updated model in the next year or two. Until then, the Silverado 3500HD will remain almost as good as the competition.
Which Silverado 3500HD does zzdcar recommend?
The base Work Truck is as bare-bones as something you'd rent from U-Haul and probably too primitive for most consumers. That's why we suggest stepping up to at least the LT trim. It's offered in all three body styles and the interior is noticeably improved. The LT is also eligible for many more options.
Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD models
The 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD is available in regular-cab, double-cab (a four-door extended cab with a small back seat) and crew-cab configurations. All three cab styles marry to a long cargo bed, but the crew cab offers a shorter standard bed to improve maneuverability. Depending on the version you choose, the Silverado 3500HD offers a choice of WT (Work Truck), LT, LTZ and High Country trim levels.A 6.6-liter gasoline-fueled V8 engine (401 horsepower, 464 lb-ft) is standard, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. A 6.6-liter diesel V8 (445 hp, 910 lb-ft) is an option and uses a 10-speed automatic. Both engines power the truck's rear wheels through a single or dual rear-wheel axle. Four-wheel drive is available and comes with an electric two-speed transfer case.
