European brands have dominated the luxury sport sedan class for decades. BMW practically invented the segment with its 3 Series in the 1970s. Japanese brands mounted a challenge in the 1990s with Lexus, Infiniti and Acura, and now the Genesis brand from South Korea is turning up the heat. Helping to lead that charge is the 2023 Genesis G70, the smallest and sportiest sedan in the lineup.

Avg. Midsize Car
Last year, the G70 received a rather significant refreshening, with updated exterior and interior styling, a larger infotainment screen and new driver assist features. Sadly, the manual transmission was discontinued, but all of the G70's praiseworthy elements return. They include a potent V6 engine, sharp handling, a lot of features for the money, and a very generous warranty. For 2023, a few features get moved from the options list to standard equipment, further enhancing the G70's value proposition.
The 2023 Genesis G70 is a more affordable alternative to other sporty sedans in the class, such as the Audi S4, BMW 3 Series and recently redesigned Mercedes-Benz C-Class. The G70 has a lot going for it besides pricing, but it also has a few items that can stand improvement, as called out in our Expert Rating below. It's getting tantalizingly close to meeting the expectations set by those European rivals, though.

Performance
7.5/10How does the G70 drive? The G70 has a potent V6 and good steering feel, and it's easy to drive. The turbocharged V6 develops 365 horsepower, making it one of the quickest in class, and it sprints to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds. With a healthy 376 lb-ft of torque on tap, the G70 doesn't have to do much downshifting, either. But we did find the transmission a little reluctant to downshift when we eventually called for it.
There's potential for the G70 to be a fun car to drive, but we found it a bit floppy in the corners. Its all-wheel drive lacks sophistication, and the all-season tires don't deliver the grip to balance out the power. Tires also affect braking numbers. Our test car came to a stop from 60 mph in 125 feet, which is subpar for the class.
Comfort
8.0/10How comfortable is the G70? The seats deliver the all-day comfort we expect from Genesis, and the suspension does a nice job of absorbing sharp bumps. The G70 has a noisier cabin than other luxury competitors. It's a very quiet cruiser on smooth roads, but road noise on rough pavement can be intrusive. The climate control does a good job of maintaining cabin temperature, and the seat heaters work quickly.
