He likes to say he learned to drive a manual transmission in a rear-wheel-drive mid-engine vehicle but often omits it was his family's 1991 Toyota Previa minivan.
The South Korean brands are quickly cementing themselves as electric vehicle leaders. Based on the same architecture as the acclaimed Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6, the Genesis GV60 offers a third equally — but uniquely — stylish way to experience one of the best EV platforms at any price. For one, it comes standard with 350-kilowatt DC fast-charging capability that allows it to replenish its battery faster than most EVs available today. And from the new-for-2024 rear-wheel-drive model with a 294-mile range to the 483-horsepower Performance trim that will hit 60 mph in less than 4 seconds, the GV60 is tremendously appealing in all kinds of ways.

Am I Ready for an EV?
EV ownership works best if you can charge (240V) at home or at work This typically means a 240V home installation, but you could also have a similar setup at your office or other places your car is already parked for several hours each day. Don't expect a regular household outlet (120V) to suffice unless you've got a plug-in hybrid, in which case overnight charging at home is feasible.
If you can’t charge at home, charging at a charging station could take at least 10x longer than at a gas station With public charging infrastructure still in its infancy, the user experience can be maddeningly inconsistent. Tesla owners tend to rave about the reliability and speed of the company's proprietary Supercharger stations, but rival DC fast options have thus far been plagued by technical issues and overcrowding. It's an evolving landscape and our best advice is to do your research on the available options for the EV you want to buy.
Adding a 240V home charging system could cost up to $1,600 or more If your existing electrical service can handle the additional demands of EV charging, you may be able to add Level 2 charging at home for less than a grand, including installation. But your costs will multiply if you need to upgrade your electrical panel or add a dedicated circuit.
zzdcar spotlight: Similarity breeds indecision
With the GV60, Genesis is putting its upscale image to the test. Not only does it share its battery pack, electric motors and charging hardware with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6, but aside from its nicer interior décor, it offers no significant luxury or technical feature that isn't also available on the Hyundai or Kia. While those two are priced similarly, an equivalently equipped GV60 runs anywhere from $5,000 to $9,000 more. All three are great EVs; the decision between them comes down to taste — and, if you're drawn to the Genesis' richer look, budget.
Competitors to consider
Aside from the strong competition coming from inside the house, there are a lot of other appealing electric SUVs in the GV60's class. The Volvo XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge offer similar range and pricing, while the Polestar 2 — Polestar being Volvo's all-electric subsidiary — tops them all with a touted 320-mile range. For slightly more interior space, look at the Ford Mustang Mach-E or Tesla Model Y. And to see what it is that makes the GV60 so appealing, read on for our Expert Rating.zzdcar Expert Rating

Performance
8.5/10How does the GV60 drive? We tested the GV60 in its Performance trim and found that it lives up to its name. At our test track it accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds. That's a little off the pace of the Tesla Model Y Performance but quicker than the BMW iX in our testing.
It's puzzling that Genesis doesn't currently offer a performance summer tire for the GV60; many performance-themed EVs come with them. Having grippier tires would help enhance the car's sporty feel. Even so, the GV60 rewards you with balanced handling and accurate steering. Its adaptive suspension is still a bit soft even on its firmest setting, but the GV60 feels playful and moves with confidence wherever it's pointed. On its all-season tires, our test GV60 Performance stopped from 60 mph in 115 feet, which is a solid showing for the class.
The GV60 is also a smooth and pleasing daily driver. It has selectable settings for both the amount of deceleration from regenerative braking and the brake pedal feel for the regular friction brakes. With the strongest regen setting, you can almost eliminate the need to touch the brake pedal.
Comfort
9.0/10How comfortable is the GV60? Genesis nailed the comfort experience in the GV60 Performance, especially considering it's one of the smaller electric SUVs on the market. The adaptive suspension, which only comes on the Performance model, delivers an impressively smooth ride. The GV60's front seats are well cushioned and highly adjustable, and the rear seats have a generous amount of recline.
The climate controls are easy to use, and every GV60 comes with front seat heating and ventilation. Rear vents are located on the door side and are well positioned to provide better airflow to passengers than more typical center-mounted vents. Capping off comfort is a cabin that is well insulated from all types of exterior noise. This is about as good as it gets for the class.
