What is the Canyon?
The 2024 GMC Canyon is a midsize truck and the smallest pickup in GMC's lineup. Slotting below the Sierra and Sierra HD, the Canyon was fully redesigned in 2023 alongside its corporate sibling, the Chevrolet Colorado. The updated Canyon featured an all-new exterior design, better in-car tech and a much-improved interior when compared to its predecessor. After spending some time behind the wheel of the new truck, including the off-road-focused AT4X trim, we found it's not only better than before but good enough to put the rest of the midsize truck field on notice. The Canyon was already one of the better-driving trucks around, and the redesign went a long way toward fixing our old complaints.
For 2024, GMC is adding a more capable model: the Canyon AT4X AEV. The AEV borrows its name from American Expedition Vehicles, an aftermarket off-road parts supplier founded more than 25 years ago in Montana. General Motors partnered with AEV a few years back to bring us the Colorado ZR2 Bison. That truck only offered a few upgrades, namely additional skid plates, rock sliders and more robust steel bumpers. The Canyon never got the AEV treatment, but that's changing for 2024.
GMC has teased the new Canyon AT4X but hasn't released all of the details yet. Based on what we've seen so far, expect more than just a little extra armor this time around. We caught a preview of the AT4X AEV at the Canyon's launch, and in addition to more underbody plating, it includes beadlock-capable wheels and 35-inch tires. The latter should give it a bit more ground clearance than the standard AT4X without having to rework the suspension. The standard AT4X's impressive Multimatic DSSV dampers should carry over, helping the truck perform well both on- and off-road.
The Canyon isn't the only GMC to get the AEV treatment — we also got a preview of the new 2024 GMC Sierra HD AT4X Extreme AEV. It offers many of the same upgrades as the Canyon, including those Multimatic shocks and larger tires. Expect both the 2024 Canyon and Sierra to go on sale later this year.

The Canyon gets a new off-road package for 2024, helping make one of the best trucks on the market even more appealing to the enthusiast crowd.
