Overview
The Honda Pilot is a three-row midsize SUV chock full of family-friendly features and backed by Honda's reputation for reliability. After a full redesign in 2023, it's likely that the Pilot will continue on sans changes for another year or two until its next refresh. The Pilot also serves as the basis for the Passport two-row SUV and the Ridgeline midsize pickup truck, giving it outsized importance for Honda.
zzdcar spotlight: Small-item storage
While the Pilot's overall cargo volume is matched by some competitors, where it shines is in its amount of storage for all the small items that a family might need to carry on a regular basis. A large center console bin sits between the front seats, and on all four doors, there are well-designed and sizable pockets to fit a variety of things. There are also cupholders at each seat that can fit a 40-ounce water bottle.
Competitors to consider
This is one of the most hotly contested segments in all of automotive, so the list of competitors is long and strong. There's our perennial favorite, the stylish and well-heeled Kia Telluride, and its Hyundai twin, the Palisade, to kick things off. Those are followed by the Toyota Highlander and the embiggened Grand Highlander, which are offered as hybrids as well, and the jumbo-sized Volkswagen Atlas with its large third row and cargo area.
zzdcar says
The Pilot remains a solid choice for midsize three-row SUV shoppers, with a set of appealing features for families. But it lacks the interior sophistication and technology features of the segment leaders, so if those are priorities it might be best to broaden your search.
