Among the first electric luxury SUVs from a traditional automaker, the I-Pace is little changed from 2019, its first year on sale. The market has boomed since then, and while the I-Pace isn't looking outdated yet, it's certainly a more familiar shape than most other EVs in its class. In our real-world zzdcar EV Range Test, we bested the EPA's estimate of 246 miles, but even the 262 miles we managed is only mid-pack now. On the other hand, few competitors can match the I-Pace's engaging driving behavior. Many EVs drive like they're different skins on the same vehicle, but the I-Pace feels distinctly Jaguar.

Am I Ready for an EV?
EV ownership works best if you can charge (240V) at home or at work This typically means a 240V home installation, but you could also have a similar setup at your office or other places your car is already parked for several hours each day. Don't expect a regular household outlet (120V) to suffice unless you've got a plug-in hybrid, in which case overnight charging at home is feasible.
If you can’t charge at home, charging at a charging station could take at least 10x longer than at a gas station With public charging infrastructure still in its infancy, the user experience can be maddeningly inconsistent. Tesla owners tend to rave about the reliability and speed of the company's proprietary Supercharger stations, but rival DC fast options have thus far been plagued by technical issues and overcrowding. It's an evolving landscape and our best advice is to do your research on the available options for the EV you want to buy.
Adding a 240V home charging system could cost up to $1,600 or more If your existing electrical service can handle the additional demands of EV charging, you may be able to add Level 2 charging at home for less than a grand, including installation. But your costs will multiply if you need to upgrade your electrical panel or add a dedicated circuit.
zzdcar spotlight: The I-Pace's simple lineup
Most other EVs in the I-Pace's class offer multiple battery pack sizes and a choice of single motor (for front- or rear-wheel drive) or dual (all-wheel drive), as well as different motor outputs. Jaguar eliminates those decisions, offering a single configuration. If you want an I-Pace, you get a 90-kWh battery pack and two motors that give the car 394 horsepower and all-wheel drive. The only significant choice buyers have to make is to go with the standard 20-inch wheels or upgrade to 22-inchers. Beware that the latter knock 29 miles — 12% — off the EPA-estimated range.
Competitors to consider
Since the I-Pace debuted, electric luxury vehicles have become the hot thing. Audi now has the Q4 and Q8 e-trons, as well as the low-slung e-tron GT; BMW, the i4, i5, i7 and iX. Mercedes-Benz has rolled out sedan and SUV versions of its EQE and EQS, as well as the EQB SUV. Even the relatively new Genesis brand offers electric versions of its G80 sedan and GV70 SUV, as well as the electric-only GV60. All are compelling, but the I-Pace has a character that few of them can match. To see what makes the I-Pace stand out, read on for our Expert Rating.zzdcar Expert Rating

Performance
8.0/10How does the I-PACE drive? Though this Jag is now a veteran in the luxury EV segment, it's quite quick by most measures. You can get to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds without breaking a sweat or making much noise. It steers and handles with enthusiasm while maintaining good poise and control. If there's a reason to get the I-Pace over any of its newer competition, it's for the fun and engagement you can have at the wheel. On the downside, our test car's emergency stopping distances were longer than average for a luxury EV, and the I-Pace's regenerative braking won't bring you to a complete stop. That latter detail may seem trivial but makes a big difference in the day-to-day driving experience.
Comfort
7.5/10How comfortable is the I-PACE? The I-Pace, like most of the luxury EVs in this class, offers a good degree of everyday comfort. The seats may not adjust in all the ways we'd dream of, but we found them supportive and satisfying even on an all-day drive. The I-Pace's adaptive air suspension has a slightly firm and sporty feel to it but manages to take enough of the edge off most bigger bumps in the roads that we don't have any real complaints. And though the I-Pace's cabin was quantifiably not as quiet as others according to our sound meter, we found it to be audibly peaceful.
The only real letdown is the climate control system, which is simultaneously weak and cumbersome to adjust. The dials that control the temperature zones serve triple duty, also controlling seat temperature and fan speed. Even after a couple of weeks of use, we found it difficult to make fumble-free adjustments. The front seats have both heat and ventilation functions, neither of which impressed our discerning derrieres.
