When the Mazda CX-9 was last redesigned in 2016, it became one of our favorite three-row midsize SUVs. As the years went on, however, its lack of interior and cargo room became more of a liability as fresher and roomier rivals such as the Kia Telluride and Volkswagen Atlas debuted. But now Mazda is back once again vying for a top spot with the all-new 2024 CX-90.

The CX-90 is similar in size to the CX-9 it replaces as Mazda's flagship, though its wheelbase (the distance between front and rear wheels) grows by 7.5 inches, benefitting passenger and cargo space. The CX-9 was notable for delivering a more luxurious interior than its contemporaries, and the CX-90 builds on that refinement by delivering an experience that rivals entry-level luxury SUVs. Acceleration is strong and smooth thanks to a turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine. All-wheel drive is standard, and Mazda even offers a plug-in hybrid version that delivers an estimated 26 miles of all-electric range on a single charge.
Overall, we're impressed with the CX-90 and think it's a desirable choice for a three-row SUV. Besides the Telluride and Atlas, other alternatives include Honda Pilot, Hyundai Palisade and Toyota Highlander. Check out our test team's Expert Rating below to get our full report on where the CX-90 shines and where it comes up a little short.
Which CX-90 does zzdcar recommend?
For most people, we recommend the CX-90 with the more powerful 3.3 Turbo S model. You get plenty of technology, safety and convenience upgrades for the money, and it adequately showcases the luxurious side of the CX-90. If you have a short commute, one of the PHEV models could make sense and possibly make up for its price premium in a few years.
Mazda CX-90 models
The 2023 Mazda CX-90 is a three-row midsize SUV with seating for a maximum of eight passengers. The lineup can be a little confusing because there are three powertrain choices and five trim levels. Starting things out is what Mazda calls the 3.3 Turbo, which is a turbocharged 3.3-liter six-cylinder engine (280 horsepower, 332 lb-ft of torque). It's paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel-drive is standard. The 3.3 Turbo S increases output to 340 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. The CX-90 PHEV employs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder and a plug-in hybrid system with a single electric motor that pulls power from a 17.8-kWh battery pack. Combined output is 323 hp and 369 lb-ft, and Mazda estimates you can travel up to 26 miles on a full charge. It also has an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. Charging the battery from zero to 100% when using a 240-volt power source takes about two hours and 20 minutes, Mazda says.
From there, Mazda pairs these powertrains with five trim levels: Select, Preferred, Preferred Plus, Premium and Premium Plus. There are some feature differences between some of the engine and trim levels.
3.3 Turbo Select
This base model comes well equipped with a long list of standard features that include:

The first model with the more powerful engine goes without a trim level name but is similar in content to the 3.3 Turbo Premium trim. Note that it also has a two-person third-row seat, reducing capacity to seven passengers.
Turbo S Premium
Upgrading to this trim generally gets you the features from the 3.3 Turbo Premium Plus. It has the second-row captain's chairs for six-passenger capacity.
Turbo S Premium Plus
