When it comes to all-out utility and hauling, nothing can beat the utter simplicity of a big box on wheels, and that's precisely what today's vans are. One of the best vans you can get is the 2023 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, which is available in a variety of configurations with a choice of three distinct engines. This year, the two diesel engines are new, with a turbocharged four-cylinder replacing last year's slightly less powerful V6. Those diesel engines also get a new nine-speed transmission to replace the previous seven-speed, and four-wheel drive has been replaced with all-wheel drive.

Avg. Large Van
As good as the Sprinter is, it's not the only game in town. The class is also made up of worthy alternatives such as the Ford Transit, Ram ProMaster and the smaller Mercedes-Benz Metris. It looks like 2023 will be a peak for the van class, as the Transit and Metris are both expected to be discontinued after 2023. Even the Sprinter's lineup will be pared down with the discontinuation of the base gasoline engine.
That means if you've been thinking of trying out the van life or if your business needs a serious hauler, you should move sooner rather than later. We suggest starting with the 2023 Sprinter so you could compare the rest against its smoother ride and nicer interior.
Which Sprinter does zzdcar recommend?
The absence of traditional trim levels means you'll be selecting a Sprinter based on your particular needs. We would recommend upgrading to the more powerful turbodiesel engine. The base four-cylinder turbo engine doesn't really cut it for a full-size van, especially one laden with cargo.
Mercedes-Benz Sprinter models
The 2023 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is a full-size van available in cargo, passenger and crew configurations. All three configurations come in 144-inch and 170-inch wheelbase lengths; the cargo van with the 170-inch wheelbase also comes in an extended version for even more cargo space. A choice of high roof or standard roof is available on all three configurations.Mercedes also offers regular 1500 and 2500 models and heavy-duty 3500 and 4500 models. The standard engine on the 1500 models is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder (188 horsepower, 258 lb-ft of torque) paired to a nine-speed automatic transmission that drives the rear wheels. This gas engine is also standard on a few configurations of the 2500 as well. Otherwise, all other Sprinters come with a turbocharged 2.0-liter diesel four-cylinder engine that has one of two outputs: a standard version (168 hp, 295 lb-ft) or a high-output version (208 hp, 332 lb-ft). All-wheel drive is optional on 2500 and 3500 models.
Standard equipment on the cargo van includes:
Metal cargo floor 270-degree-opening rear doors Heated mirrors Front seats Cruise control Air conditioning Tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel Rearview camera Sound system and two USB ports Forward collision mitigation (warns you of an impending collision and applies the brakes in certain scenarios) Crosswind assist (helps the driver stay on course in windy conditions)The crew van (2500 and up) adds:
Second-row three-seat bench for five-passenger seating Side-door windowsThe passenger van (available in 1500 and 2500 configurations) features:
Three rows of rear seats Rear interior trim and tinted rear windowsThe options list is lengthy and can change depending on configuration, but highlights include:
Driver's side sliding rear door Heavy-duty suspension Front and rear parking sensors and a 360-degree parking camera Upgraded front seats with heating Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system with either a 7- or a 10.25-inch touchscreen Navigation systemCargo and crew vans can be equipped with driver-compartment partitions, a roof fan (or heater), a fixed rear sunroof, roof rails and various interior storage options. The passenger van can be equipped with rear air conditioning.
Optional driver aids for all three models include:
Adaptive cruise control (adjusts speed to maintain a constant distance between the Sprinter and the car in front) Blind-spot warning (alerts you if a vehicle in the next lane over is in your blind spot) Rear cross-traffic alert (warns you if a vehicle behind you is about to cross your vehicle's path while in reverse) Lane keeping assistance (steers the car back into its lane if it begins to drift over the lane marker)
