Am I Ready for an EV?

　　EV ownership works best if you can charge (240V) at home or at work This typically means a 240V home installation, but you could also have a similar setup at your office or other places your car is already parked for several hours each day. Don't expect a regular household outlet (120V) to suffice unless you've got a plug-in hybrid, in which case overnight charging at home is feasible.

　　If you can’t charge at home, charging at a charging station could take at least 10x longer than at a gas station With public charging infrastructure still in its infancy, the user experience can be maddeningly inconsistent. Tesla owners tend to rave about the reliability and speed of the company's proprietary Supercharger stations, but rival DC fast options have thus far been plagued by technical issues and overcrowding. It's an evolving landscape and our best advice is to do your research on the available options for the EV you want to buy.

　　Adding a 240V home charging system could cost up to $1,600 or more If your existing electrical service can handle the additional demands of EV charging, you may be able to add Level 2 charging at home for less than a grand, including installation. But your costs will multiply if you need to upgrade your electrical panel or add a dedicated circuit.

　　

zzdcar spotlight: A case of "why not?"

About that GLS gas-powered counterpart: The electric Maybach is a thinly veiled "because they can" exercise, but it will resonate with specific buyers. First, it's more powerful and faster than the twin-turbo-powered GLS. Mercedes says the electric Maybach can dash from zero to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds, about a half-second quicker than both the GLS and Benz EQS 580 SUV. Mercedes says the Maybach's range is 280 miles, nearly the same as the EQS 580 SUV's 285-mile range. Mercedes also says you can add about half of that in 15 minutes of charging and up to 80% battery capacity in 30 minutes, so time spent admiring the optional silver-plated Champagne flutes from the rear heated loungers can be kept short.

　　

Competitors to consider

Despite its palatial extravagance and womb-like serenity, the Maybach EQS 680 SUV is a fairly ordinary EV underneath. If you're not after the chauffeur treatment, there are several luxury electric SUV alternatives such as the Porsche Taycan Turbo or Turbo S. Neither try to seal off the world outside; on the contrary, they make the road come alive with Herculean power and speed, zipping from 0 to 60 mph in as few as 2.4 seconds. While the Taycan isn't an SUV, its two storage spaces combine for more cargo space than the Maybach's meager 15.3 cubic feet. The forthcoming Cadillac Celestiq promises to be an intriguing ultra-luxe rival, although each will be built by hand in extremely limited production, and we expect it to cost nearly double the Maybach. If it's just a high-luxury SUV you seek, gas-powered options abound, including the Aston Martin DBX, Bentley Bentayga and Lamborghini Urus.

　　

Which Maybach EQS SUV does zzdcar recommend?

With just one trim level, there's not much to recommend. But what fun would a stock Maybach be? In that spirit, we'd take our EQS 680 SUV and add the mini-fridge to keep the cheese and caviar cold, the folding tables to enjoy said delicacies on the move, and the Nappa leather upgrade to better sleep off our digestive indulgences.

The 2024 Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV is a four-door electric crossover that seats up to five passengers. It's offered in a single trim level, the EQS 680 SUV. Dual electric motors generate 649 horsepower and 700 lb-ft of torque, drawn from a 108-kWh battery pack. The Maybach supports 200-kW DC fast charging, which can replenish the battery from 10% to 80% capacity in about 30 minutes. Mercedes says the Maybach EQS SUV has a 280-mile range, which is on par with competitors and impressive for a nearly 7,000-pound SUV.
