Almost one year after the introduction of the E-Class’ sixth generation came on the market in May 2023, Mercedes-AMG released the E53 version, which produced more power than customers expected.
The German in-house tuning company worked extensively to provide customers with a surprisingly good experience with the 2024 E53 model. Unlike its predecessor, it came with a larger battery pack that allowed it to run on electrons alone for about 100 km (62 miles) at speeds of up to 140 kph (87 mph). But AMG versions were not just about power and performance. They were also about styling. Unlike the rest of the range, it came with a more aggressive exterior look. In addition, the cabin also boasted a high level of luxury mixed with a healthy dose of sports-oriented details.
For instance, at the front, the 2024 Mercedes-AMG E53 featured a standard AMG-specific grille with illuminated vertical slats. It was flanked by the Matrix LED headlights. Furthermore, the front fenders were 11 mm (0.4 inches) wider than those installed on the regular E-Class W214. In addition, a lower air intake cooled the battery pack and the electronic components, while the side scoops with two horizontal flaps channeled air toward the front rotors.
From its profile, the E53 AMG was instantly distinguishable from the rest of the E-Class range. The front fenders featured fake vents with the Turbo Hybrid wording underneath them. Furthermore, the car sat on standard 19-inch light alloy wheels, with options for 20- and 21-inch sets. These let bystanders admire the massive 390 mm (15.4”) rotors with six-pot calipers. Furthermore, the AMG-specific details continued with the side sills that visually connected the front and rear fenders. Finally, at the back, the car featured a four-exhaust system neatly integrated into the rear diffuser.
Inside, customers were greeted by standard sports seats wrapped in a mix of ARTICO (man-made leather) and MICROCUT (microfiber). The E53 came fitted as standard with an AMG-specific Superscreen version that displayed the Mercedes-AMG logo in front of the side passenger. The center touchscreen was for the MBUX multimedia system, which featured specific ones dedicated to AMG vehicles besides the menus for the regular E-Class W214. There was enough room for two passengers on the rear bench seat, while a third one had to deal with the transmission tunnel that limited legroom.
But the real magic happened under the car’s skin. Under the hood was a three-liter inline-six turbocharged engine that produced 449 PS (443 hp). That was not a far departure from the previous E53 W213, which produced 435 PS (429 hp). The main difference was the electric motor that provided an additional 120 kW (163 hp) for a total output of 585 PS (577 hp). In addition, a launch-control mode named RACE START increased that value to a total of 612 PS (603 hp). That helped the car get a 0 to 100 kph (0-62 mph) run in 3.8 seconds. Power went in all corners via a fully variable all-wheel drive AMG Performance 4Matic+ system. Thanks to the adaptive suspension and the wider front track compared to the regular Mercedes-Benz E-Class W214, the 2024 E53 handled better around corners. In addition, it featured an all-wheel steering system.
