Similar to its primary rivals in the commercial cargo van segment, the 2023 Ram ProMaster Cargo Van is based on a vehicle originally designed to serve on the narrow streets of congested European cities. That means it provides as much interior volume in as small a footprint as possible to ensure easier maneuvering in close quarters. However, this approach does not reduce the ProMaster Cargo Van's capabilities. Depending on the configuration, the standard V6 engine can tow up to 6,910 pounds and carry up to 4,680 pounds of payload.

The ProMaster's maximum cargo space has increased this year thanks to the debut of a new super-high roof option for the 3500 series van. It adds an extra 10 inches of headroom compared to the high-roof configuration and provides more than 500 cubic feet of maximum cargo space, which is right up there with the max figures of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Ford Transit. Cargo area lengths range between 8 feet and 13.5 feet, and because the Ram ProMaster uses a front-wheel-drive powertrain, it provides a low load floor that is just 21 inches above the ground. That makes it easier to load and unload a ProMaster.
Ram also introduces a new roll-up cargo door option for 2023. It replaces the conventional hinged rear doors, allowing quicker access to the cargo area and improved access in tight parking situations. Another new feature for 2023 is a semi-automated parking assistance system that can steer the van into parallel and perpendicular parking spaces. It pairs with available front and rear parking sensors, a camera-based digital rearview mirror, and a surround-view camera to make it easier to drive and park the ProMaster in tight, confined areas.
One thing the Ram ProMaster doesn't offer is all-wheel drive. So if you live where rain, snow or mud are common on the roads, you might want to consider the Ford Transit or Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. Otherwise, the Ram ProMaster Cargo Van offers plenty of capability in a competitive package.
Which Promaster Cargo Van does zzdcar recommend?
When you buy a Ram ProMaster Cargo Van, you choose from the 1500, 2500 and 3500 models that correspond to payload ratings. From there, you select a wheelbase length and a roof height that will serve your needs and add options to customize the van to your preferences. We suggest starting with the 2500 High Roof with the 136-inch wheelbase and then adjusting the specifications based on your requirements.
Ram Promaster Cargo Van models
Ram doesn't offer the 2023 ProMaster Cargo in prepackaged trim levels. Instead, you pick the 1500, 2500 or 3500 based on the payload capacity you require. These designations loosely correspond to light-, medium- and heavy-duty designations. Then you must consider your cargo volume requirements and where you'll use the van. Ram offers the ProMaster with a short, standard or long wheelbase with two body lengths and three roof styles. From there, your decision-making is easier. The 2023 ProMaster Cargo Van comes only with a 3.6-liter V6 engine (276 horsepower, 250 lb-ft of torque), a nine-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is unavailable.
