Hybrid technology is no longer limited to weird-looking economy cars, but even today it is surprising to find such outstanding efficiency in a car as large as the Camry. Toyota's midsize sedan has plenty of room for adults in the front and back seats, a reasonably sized trunk, and fuel economy nearly as high as the Prius'. You don't give up much for the improved fuel economy either. The Camry Hybrid is still quite spacious, comfortable and affordable.

zzdcar spotlight: Your mileage may vary
The 2024 Toyota Camry Hybrid is an efficiency all-star. According to the EPA, the LE gets 52 mpg in combined city/highway driving. That's excellent for a midsize hybrid sedan. The EPA's estimate drops a little for the SE, XSE and XLE trims because of their wheels and tires (they're more stylish but not quite as good for overall fuel economy), but even then you're still looking at an appealing 46 mpg.
Competitors to consider
Toyota isn't the only brand to squeeze heroic fuel economy out of a midsize sedan. The Hyundai Sonata Hybrid also gets 52 mpg combined, and the hybrid version of the Honda Accord manages 48 mpg combined. Buyers in the snowbelt wanting all-wheel drive won't find it on the Camry, but Toyota does offer it on other hybrids. The new Toyota Crown sedan comes only as a hybrid with all-wheel drive and gets an estimated 41 mpg. The Prius is also available with AWD. Performance
7.0/10How does the Camry Hybrid drive? There's goodness in broad swaths with the Camry Hybrid. The sedan's power is decent in day-to-day use. In our testing, we measured a 0-60 mph time of about 8 seconds, which is slightly better than average for a midsize hybrid sedan.
Hybrid performance is smooth and care-free. Braking is predictable and very usable in everyday applications, and the low-rolling-resistance tires, which are common in this class, also provide average braking distances. Steering and handling are decent for the class. Overall, it's acceptable from a performance standpoint, but day-to-day commuting is its main strength.
Comfort
8.0/10How comfortable is the Camry Hybrid? Comfort is where any midsize sedan should shine and the Camry Hybrid does just that. The climate control creates a welcome environment, and the seating comfortably accommodates a range of body types. The optional ventilated seats are a boon in warmer climates, and there's very little noise in the cabin coming from wind or the road at highway speeds.
Our only nitpick is the XLE Hybrid's ride comfort. It's great around town but can sometimes feel overly buoyant at highway speeds. The extra weight of the hybrid system is evident.
