In 2020, Toyota revived the Supra name after a 21-year absence. As with past Supras, this fifth generation represents the sportiest model in Toyota's lineup, sitting above the smaller and more affordable GR86 and GR Corolla. The 2024 GR Supra (the GR stands for Toyota's Gazoo Racing division) isn't all Toyota, though. It's based on the BMW Z4 roadster, though the GR Supra is tuned to be far more exciting. This year the GR Supra returns mostly unchanged, though there is a new 45th Anniversary Edition with unique styling elements.
zzdcar spotlight: Athletic and efficient
With 382 horsepower coming from the available turbocharged six-cylinder, the GR Supra sprints to 60 mph in a quick 4.2 seconds. It's a wonderful partner on a challenging mountain road, with precise and predictable steering, an impressive amount of grip, and a balance that makes it feel as though you can make it dance. The GR Supra may not be the fastest, but it is incredibly rewarding and entertaining. Thankfully, all that fun doesn't come at the expense of fuel economy. It's estimated at 26 mpg in combined city and highway driving, which is an admirable and easily attainable figure for sport coupes. Check out our Expert Rating below for more detailed information on where the GR Supra leads and follows.
Competitors to consider
The GR Supra's BMW roots have us comparing it against more expensive alternatives such as the Porsche 718 Cayman and Chevrolet Corvette, which have starting prices above the most expensive GR Supra. That said, if you have the money, you can't do much better. The Nissan Z has been the Supra's historic rival, but the current model trails performance-wise even though it's priced competitively. If bang for the buck is a priority, the Ford Mustang is always a solid choice, though it lacks the refinement of the Toyota.zzdcar Expert Rating

Performance
8.5/10How does the GR Supra drive? The Supras of the past were more about straight-line speed than nimble handling, but this latest incarnation succeeds at both. In zzdcar' testing, our Supra with the six-cylinder engine and automatic transmission rocketed to 60 mph in a quick 4.4 seconds. Around turns, the steering wheel communicates a fair amount of information from the front tires to your hands. There's plenty of grip from the tires, and the overall feel of the car is playful and engaging. The brakes and sticky tires hauled our test Supra to a stop from 60 mph in just 105 feet, though for heavier use, like track driving, it would probably benefit from upgraded brake pads. The GR Supra isn't strictly a weekend car, however. It's something you can drive with little effort every day.
Comfort
7.0/10How comfortable is the GR Supra? The seats provide excellent support, but you might find them a bit confining around your shoulders. It's not too noticeable when driving at speed, but it's apparent when cruising around. The leather upholstery isn't perforated, so its breathability isn't great. The ride quality is firm but not harsh. Because you sit so close to the rear axle, big vertical movements feel more pronounced.
We wouldn't call this a quiet cabin since there's a fair amount of road and wind noise, but it's not unpleasantly loud either. It lets in the right amount of induction noise and exhaust burbles when you're driving in Sport mode. As for the climate control system, there's no obvious way to sync its two zones, which is odd. It could stand to be a tick stronger at max fan speed too.
