The S60 is Volvo's stylish premium compact sedan. It's positioned below the larger S90 sedan. For 2022, Volvo added a mild hybrid system to the base turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. The new designation for the engine is B5 (it was formally T5). The supercharged and turbocharged T6 engine is no longer available, but the top plug-in hybrid Recharge T8 engine is still an option.

Notably, Volvo is updating the Recharge T8 midway through the model year with a higher-capacity battery and a more powerful rear electric motor. The combination provides more power — a heady 455 horsepower — plus the ability to drive farther on all-electric power. The EPA estimates the updated version can go up to 41 miles on a charge, which is pretty impressive for a luxury plug-in hybrid.
The Swedish sedan might not sell as well as some of its competition — which includes the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class — but the S60 still has a lot to offer in terms of advanced driver aids and style. In addition, the S60 provides a comfortable ride thanks to its superb seat comfort, handles like a true sport sedan, and has excellent build quality.
Which S60 does zzdcar recommend?
If you prefer the base B5 engine, passing on the base Momentum trim is a good idea because the next Inscription and R-Design trims have identical slightly higher starting prices but offer much more. Those wanting the Recharge T8 powertrain should also go for the same trims, and pass on the Polestar Engineered model unless you want the added performance. You just need to decide if you want the luxurious-looking Inscription or the sporty-looking R-Design.
Volvo S60 models
The 2022 Volvo S60 is available in Momentum, Inscription and R-Design trims with the B5 engine option. All B5 trims are offered in either front- or all-wheel drive. The plug-in hybrid Recharge T8 engine option is available in R-Design Expression, R-Design, Inscription and Polestar Engineered trims and has standard all-wheel drive. Here's what you get from each:The B5 is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 247 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. It's paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Recharge T8 combines that engine with additional plug-in hybrid componentry for more power and greater fuel efficiency, particularly if you can charge frequently. But pay close attention to which Recharge T8 you're considering because Volvo updated this version midway through 2022. T8s built early in the model year produce 400 hp and 472 lb-ft and have an EPA-estimated all-electric range of 19 miles. Later versions, called the Extended Range, have 41 miles of range plus more power: 455 hp and 523 lb-ft.
There's also a performance model called the Polestar Engineered. It's based on the Recharge T8. Early versions have 415 hp and 494 lb-ft. Later versions have the same power that comes from the Extended Range upgrade.
