This 437-Mile 2002 BMW M5 Sold for $176,000 at Auction
This 437-Mile 2002 BMW M5 Sold for $176,000 at Auction-November 2024

To many, the 1999 to 2003 E39 is the best sedan BMW’s ever built. With its powerful naturally aspirated V8 engine, lovely six-speed manual, and incredible agility all built into a practical and downright gorgeous package, it remains a benchmark even today. But does that legendary status justify this $176,000 auction purchase?

“Time Capsule Example,” collector-car auction house Gooding & Company writes in its for this Titanium Silver 2002 BMW M5, which was put up for auction in Pebble Beach in late August.

Those words may not be hyperbole, either, because looking at the photos, you’ll see an odometer reading just 437 miles, beautiful black Nappa leather seats, and an exterior that may as well have been bubbled-wrapped from the factory.

The auction site says the car has been “meticulously serviced,” and spent most of its time in a climate-controlled storage area. The M5—which comes with the original window sticker, service records, and BMW accessories—was apparently owned by a California BMW fan who “acquired two of nearly every car in his collection, one to drive and one to preserve.”

This is apparently the E39 he preserved, and car culture is richer because of it. So is the seller.

Looks like we should have all purchased and stored E39 M5s back in the early 2000s, because good lord, have these gone up in value.

Blah, blah blah, Ranchero, Yada, yada, yada, El Camino. Let us not get into a debate over the merits of car-based pickup trucks, let us only bask in the awesome possum that is today's SHO Taurus truck, the only debatable element of which may be its price. When, back in...

For $1,900, Be Lightning McQueen For A Day
The Pixar film Cars is a story of redemption and personal growth about, well cars. Today's 1996 Dodge Avenger has been given new life as a homage to that CGI flick, but is there anything redeemable about its price? Yesterday's may have been claimed Certified, but most of the comments...

The L.L. Bean Bootmobile: First Drive
During a recent stop in Times Square, L.L. Bean let us drive its new promotional vehicle — the Ford truck-powered Bootmobile. What better to strap into on a windy, January afternoon in midtown Manhattan than footwear the size of a UPS truck, right? In 1912, Leon Leonwood Bean brainstormed a...

For $46,000, This Cobra is a Pirate
Grammatically, pirates use ‘Arr' as an indefinite article, as in Arr, ‘tis a fast car, I seek*. Ford's SVT team used ‘R' to denote their most venomous of Cobras, and today's snake is definitely a desirable article, but is its price too much of a pirate's booty call? If you've...

For $18,995, Witness For The Defense
They say the best defense is a good offense. Today's Land Rover Defender 90 looks pretty good, but is its price offensive? Born in 1948, the Land Rover is, next to the Jeep, the oldest 4x4 brand offered to consumers. Despite being of an age when it might seem appropriate...
