This 437-Mile 2002 BMW M5 Sold for $176,000 at Auction
This 437-Mile 2002 BMW M5 Sold for $176,000 at Auction-October 2024

To many, the 1999 to 2003 E39 is the best sedan BMW’s ever built. With its powerful naturally aspirated V8 engine, lovely six-speed manual, and incredible agility all built into a practical and downright gorgeous package, it remains a benchmark even today. But does that legendary status justify this $176,000 auction purchase?

“Time Capsule Example,” collector-car auction house Gooding & Company writes in its for this Titanium Silver 2002 BMW M5, which was put up for auction in Pebble Beach in late August.

Those words may not be hyperbole, either, because looking at the photos, you’ll see an odometer reading just 437 miles, beautiful black Nappa leather seats, and an exterior that may as well have been bubbled-wrapped from the factory.

The auction site says the car has been “meticulously serviced,” and spent most of its time in a climate-controlled storage area. The M5—which comes with the original window sticker, service records, and BMW accessories—was apparently owned by a California BMW fan who “acquired two of nearly every car in his collection, one to drive and one to preserve.”

This is apparently the E39 he preserved, and car culture is richer because of it. So is the seller.

Looks like we should have all purchased and stored E39 M5s back in the early 2000s, because good lord, have these gone up in value.

This 1979 Mercedes Benz 300SD Asks $6,800, Has More Miles Than A Jazz Retrospective
At what point does a car’s odometer no longer have relevance? Today’s 300SD is claimed to have put over a quarter-million miles on the clock. Let’s see if it still has miles to go before it sleeps. Geez, considering the response yesterday’s received you might think I’d instead asked you...

For $8,999, This 1989 Jaguar XJ6 Is Business Up Front And A Party In Back
The seller of today’s Jag says it’s owned by an ‘eccentric 81-year old family friend.’ I guess that’s a good way to describe someone who’d have a Jagamino. Let’s see if it is eccentrically priced too. It seems as though the sun will never set on the British Empire, what...

For $900, This 1973 Citroën GS1220 Is French Inaction
Muhammad Ali once claimed to float like a butterfly and sting like a bee. Contrastingly, it will take a bit to make today’s Citroën float down the road on its hydropneumatic suspension again, and that’s only if its price doesn’t sting. While its zero to sixty time may be measured...

For $8,900, This 1966 Ford Bronco U13 Roadster Says Giddy Up
Today’s Bronco comes with a bikini top, a fold-down windshield, and to top it off, a seriously bad-ass vibe. Let’s see if its price needs a little off the top too. Would you stick googly eyes on the Mona Lisa and think it’s an improvement? Would you likewise add a...

For $7,900, This 1995 Range Rover County Is A Mean Green Luxo-Leaning Machine
Today’s Range Rover is painted British Racing Green. I think it looks good in that color, but will this venerable Brit of questionable rep require too much of your green? Have you ever seen those “As Seen on TV” products? They’re supposed to be revolutionary, promising things like never spilling...

My Stanced And Bagged 2005 Subaru Baja Is Almost As Awesome As A 2016 WRX STI
I have loved cars since I could talk, and I’ve loved Subarus almost as long. I love them so much that I daily-drive one of the wildest and worst Subies in New York—a bagged and stanced 2005 Baja Turbo. But when I talked my way into a brand new ,...
