This 437-Mile 2002 BMW M5 Sold for $176,000 at Auction
This 437-Mile 2002 BMW M5 Sold for $176,000 at Auction-November 2024

To many, the 1999 to 2003 E39 is the best sedan BMW’s ever built. With its powerful naturally aspirated V8 engine, lovely six-speed manual, and incredible agility all built into a practical and downright gorgeous package, it remains a benchmark even today. But does that legendary status justify this $176,000 auction purchase?

“Time Capsule Example,” collector-car auction house Gooding & Company writes in its for this Titanium Silver 2002 BMW M5, which was put up for auction in Pebble Beach in late August.

Those words may not be hyperbole, either, because looking at the photos, you’ll see an odometer reading just 437 miles, beautiful black Nappa leather seats, and an exterior that may as well have been bubbled-wrapped from the factory.

The auction site says the car has been “meticulously serviced,” and spent most of its time in a climate-controlled storage area. The M5—which comes with the original window sticker, service records, and BMW accessories—was apparently owned by a California BMW fan who “acquired two of nearly every car in his collection, one to drive and one to preserve.”

This is apparently the E39 he preserved, and car culture is richer because of it. So is the seller.

Looks like we should have all purchased and stored E39 M5s back in the early 2000s, because good lord, have these gone up in value.

Owning a Nissan Versa Sucks When My Wife Has a Corvette! What Car Should I Buy?
Steven cruises around in a humble Nissan Versa while his better half rocks a Corvette Stingray. He likes the fuel economy and low maintenance, but it can be a bit embarrassing when clients spot his ride. It’s time for something a little nicer. What car should he buy? (Welcome back...

The 2018 Suzuki Jimny Is the Off-Road Bargain of Your Dreams, and the Highway Cruiser of Your Nightmares
To an off-road enthusiast, the seems too good to be true. Tiny body-on-frame design, beefy solid axles, small overhangs, low curb weight, low-range transfer case, rugged looks, reasonable price—on paper, it seems perfect. I just drove the little off-roader and can confirm: It is the real deal. Except on the...

At $8,000, Could This 2001 Lexus LX470 Be Your Gold Standard?
The seller of today’s LX470 claims it was built to go the distance. We’ll just have to see how far you might be willing to go to buy it. Have you ever heard the story of Jennifer Grey, the actress? You may remember her as Ferris Bueller’s consternated sister, or...

This 1975 Volvo C303 Might Be the Toughest Truck on Craigslist Right Now
I will say that I am biased. I have driven this 1975 . I have taken it through traffic. I have bombed the highway in it. I have attempted to go wheeling in it in a quiet corner of Brooklyn. It is military-grade and tough beyond measure. And now it’s...

How Do I Handle Taxes For an Out of State Car Purchase?
As Jalopnik’s resident car buying expert and professional car shopper, I get emails. Lots of emails. I’ve decided to pick a few questions and try to help out. This week we are discussing taxes and fees when buying out of state, what “dealer prep” means, and the need for insurance...

At $1,800, Would You Side With This Mega-Mileage 1991 BMW 535i?
The seller of today’s Bimmer gives us plenty of shots of its reasonably unblemished driver’s side, but only one of its less-pretty curb face. Let’s see if that, and its high miles, overcome a stick shift and a potentially low price. Well, I was shocked—shocked, I tell you—by the 55...
