2009 VW Jetta SportWagen TDI, Part Three
2009 VW Jetta SportWagen TDI, Part Three-April 2024

The is frugal and fun, but its DSG transmission doesn't suit the diesel engine. Should you buy one?

You want a car that's pretty fast and very frugal and your Labrador hates being left at home. You want a practical, economical family car, but you haven't been brainwashed into thinking your only option once you're pregnant with your first child is a 9-seat Suburban. You like the idea of hybrid fuel economy, but not the lackluster hybrid driving experience. You're a white lab coat-wearing teutonophile with a thing for precise oil-burners. You understand what's going on underneath the hood of a car and are able to wrap your moderately-sized intellect around the concept of DSG.

You eat every meal at Mickey D's and your idea of automotive excellence is a late ‘90s Buick. You think diesel is the fuel of communists. The idea of your car doing anything other than slushing its way slowly up to highway speed questions your fundamental understanding of the world. The idea of a Palin/Limbaugh ticket in 2010 has you up at night polishing your guns with excitement. You're the average driver and, like all your peers, you've subconsciously learned to fear any car that requires any thought from its driver. You know how to drive stick.

This Seemingly Beat Up Dodge Caravan Hides A Fun Secret
I probably spend way too much time looking at cars I can’t afford. Most recently I was looking at a sweet when I spotted with a high bid for its condition. Why were people willing to pay so much for this thing? Turns out, it’s hiding some horsepower under...

The 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV Is Inexpensive And Spacious, But It Lacks AWD, Proper Fast Charging
Let’s get one thing out of the way: The 2022 is not a “utility vehicle” by any stretch of the imagination. It is, however, a roomier version of the hatchback that’s been on sale since 2017. ( John Voelcker was invited to drive GM’s new Bolt EUV in a...

The Overhauled 2021 Jaguar F-Pace SVR Is Finally The Comfortable Super SUV It Deserves To Be
You know that bit towards the end of a relationship when you both know that it’s coming to an end but don’t want to admit it? When you put extra effort in to cover up the fact that you’re two people heading in very different directions, it can be wonderful,...

At $20,900, Is This Restored 2002 Chevy Camaro Interceptor An Arresting Deal?
Restoring cop cars to their former glory isn’t a common hobby, but as today’s Camaro demonstrates, the results can be pretty cool for those who make the attempt. Let’s see what this old-school interceptor might bring in today’s dollars. According to Forbes, Maserati holds the ignominious honor of having...

At $8,950, Will This 1986 Maserati Biturbo Zagato Spyder Have You Singing A New Tune?
Today’s Maserati was built by the respected Italian design house Zagato. It was then modded to make it a “one of a kind” car. Let’s see if its price makes it a one-of-a-kind deal. I’ve never understood the whole concept of “less is more.” I mean, that just doesn’t...

Today’s Regal has everything you could want in a comfortable highway cruiser. Let’s see if its price puts the idea of buying it on cruise control. Playing “cops and robbers” is probably something kids just don’t do anymore. If you lament the passing of that old-school playtime staple then...
