First Look

The 2016 BMW X1 has been officially unveiled at the 2015 Frankfurt International Motor Show. This is the second generation of the X1 that is based on a new front-wheel drive UKL architecture.

2016 BMW X1

The X1 not just looks big, but is larger and taller still carrying forward the X family’s legacy. BMW has increased the width by 21mm and height by 53mm, while the length has reduced by 36mm. The fascia sports a protruding front grille with its traditional kidney shape and circular headlamps with LED DRLs. The sporty look is retained with the plastic cladding, roof-mounted spoiler, sloping roofline, wrap-around tail lamps and dual exhaust pipes.

Though there are a few changes in the cabin of the BMW X1, the carmaker has retained the overall layout from the previous model. The dashboard and upholstery is updated and a revised iDrive system can be opted for with a 6.5-inch or 8.5-inch display.

2016 BMW X1

Coming to the powertrain, the 2016 BMW X1 is offered in a range of four-cylinder petrol and diesel engine options with BMW’s TwinPower Turbo technology. The 2.0-litre four-cylinder unit, which will also be introduced for the Indian market, is offered in power outputs of 148bhp, 190bhp and 231bhp. This powerplant promises a 17 per cent reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Transmission options include a six-speed manual and eight-speed steptronic automatic gearbox.

2016 BMW X1

With a heavy dose of styling, this is for the first time that the X1 is offered as a FWD car with a new platform. Nevertheless, the all-wheel drive system is also available in the xDrive20d variant. The new X1 is lighter than the earlier model by 135kg thanks to the extensive use of aluminium in its construction. The car will be launched in some European markets next month, while its Indian debut might happen in early 2016.
