The time has come again, my friends, to delve into the world of Craigslist and the search term “project”. Every once in a while that search turns up a gem or two, and this one has been certified by this terrible car gemologist to be a real one. With the state of the enthusiast car market, it’s impossible to find something fun that is not a giant cash vacuum. I’m not sure yet that this 964 Cabriolet won’t be a cash vacuum, but when it’s done you can tell people you bought it for twelve grand and watch their jaws drop.

This particular Porsche hasn’t seen the light of day in a while, as it’s been tucked away in a garage getting ignored. It doesn’t have an engine or transmission, despite the listing calling this transmission-less car a “manual”. That doesn’t mean you need to be discouraged, however, as there are options. Obviously the most sane one is to find a used 964 engine and transmission and bolt them back into place. Or you could go hog-wild and build a big-turbo Volkswagen 1.8T, you could call Renegade Performance and swap in an LS engine, or you could brew up your own ridiculous swap. This 964 is your oyster.

My brain knows this is a bad idea, but my heart is already fully invested. My heart says “Okay, yeah, so it doesn’t have a title and it might have been involved in an accident but this is a great starting point for a fun and fresh sports car. You could definitely call yourself a ‘real’ Porsche owner if you bought this. I believe in you and your talents, you could definitely get this project running by next spring. Good 964s are like 60 grand now, this is a steal!”

Here’s the listing, for posterity:

You won’t suck me into project car hell this time, Craigslist. But keep trying, though. I can’t resist forever. This one almost got me...

For those who believe in their hearts much more than their brains, , and the car is located in Sacramento, California.

What Do You Want To Know About The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek Sport?
I’m driving a new, blue, Subaru Crosstrek Sport this weekend and I’m pretty excited. I have always admired Subaru for pulling off one of the better cons on Americans. I mean, Americans love cons. We love getting conned. We love conning other people! We love it when we get...

At $7,799, Is This 2002 Mazda Miata SE A Limited Edition With Limitless Appeal?
While today’s MX5 is one of only 1,000 special SE models built, it’s been made even more unique by the addition of an aggressive body kit. That may not be to everyone’s taste, but it’s still to be seen if the price tag might. Alarmingly, many of you dismissed...

I'm Looking For A Cheap Car That My Son And I Can Make Faster! What Car Should I Buy?
Doug wants to get a cheap car for his 16-year-old son. Unlike most parents who just want safe, reliable, and boring, Doug wants something that the two of them can tune up and make faster. However, he doesn’t want to buy an obvious performance car out of the gate....

America Is Running Low On Minivans
There are plenty of factors contributing to the current warped world of locked-down travel, computer chip shortages and other disrupted supply and manufacturing around the world, but most of them currently relate to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. One symptom of the industry’s struggles is a dramatic shortage of stock...

At $5,200, Is Buying This 2001 Mercedes SLK230 An Open and Shut Case?
The vast majority of car buyers may prefer transmissions that shift themselves, but today’s SLK230 is for that small minority that likes to take matters — and shifting — into their own hands. Let’s see what so limited a market might do to its worth. It’s safe to say...

At $23,900, Could This 2005 Porsche Cayenne Turbo Put Some Sport In Your Utility?
The seller of today’s Cayenne has owned the car for all of one month. Now finances are forcing its sale, and we’re going to decide if it’s worth a new buyer exercising their own finances to buy it. There are times when imperfection unexpectedly results in near perfection. The...
