The Best Way To Race Is To Race Everything
The Best Way To Race Is To Race Everything-April 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:11:32

Most of us would be very tempted to strike a deal with Lucifer himself if we could go racing every weekend. For Tyler McQuarrie, all he had to do was find the right sponsor. He’ll be racing in six different series this year (which is insane and unheard of) and we couldn’t be more jealous.

When Safecraft Safety Equipment—the Safecraft, not the Safecraft—wanted a driver for their “Race Everything” campaign, they tipped drifter and road racer Tyler McQuarrie to go do it. McQuarrie was tipped for his versatility.

“Thoroughout my career, I’ve always driven other types of cars,” Mcquarrie told Jalopnik. “My background is racing, and then I started doing drifting, and I’ve raced all kinds of stuff.”

McQuarrie will be racing in six different series this year: a SCORE Trophy Truck that runs on renewable diesel fuel, a Formula Drift Camaro, a stock car in ARCA, a Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport in the Continental Tire Sports Car Series, a Lamborghini in Pirelli World Challenge and a Stadium Super Truck for the series’ United States rounds.

McQuarrie said that it’s the number of different disciplines that makes this schedule stand out from what a lot of other pros are doing:

I’ve run into a couple driver friends, and they’re like, you know you won the lottery, right? I’m like, yes. For sure! There’s some drivers out there that are racing every weekend—there’s quite a few—but I don’t know any that are running every weekend in a different discipline every single weekend.

In April, he went from the glamorous Grand Prix of Long Beach weekend one week to a small town in Indiana for ARCA the next. ARCA was “pretty foreign” to McQuarrie, as he made his debut there in April. “Oval racing isn’t something I’ve done a lot of,” he admitted.

Is going from one discipline to the next easy, though, or does it take a while for your brain to catch up that you’re in a totally different kind of car? McQuarrie explained:

It’s kind of like if you were to go play golf one weekend, then basketball the next day, baseball, tennis—you know, they’re all sports, but ... they have different goals and objectives for every time you’re doing a different sport.

It’s the same thing for me out here. Every car—you’re trying to get it to do something different, so as a driver, you’re just trying to manipulate that machine to do what you want. In my situation, every weekend, I’m having to kind of reset my brain for what I need to do in the car, but I’ve always been pretty good at quickly adapting to stuff.

So, there you have it. Want to luck out for a once-in-a-lifetime deal to go out and race all the cars? Start racing in multiple disciplines. Besides, with all that drifting experience, you know McQuarrie knows how to save a car when it gets sideways.
