The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe Continues To Answer Questions Nobody Asked
The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe Continues To Answer Questions Nobody Asked-April 2024

2022 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe M440i

BMW the second generation of the 4 Series Gran Coupe on Wednesday, marking the epitome of Bavarian “let’s see if we can create a niche within a niche” confusion. The Gran Coupe continues to be an answer to a question no one ever asked. It’s a Gran Coupe for your Gran, I guess.

Two models of the GC will be available at launch. The base model is a 430i Gran Coupe, which starts at $44,800. That model gets a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 255 horsepower. BMW says it can get from zero to 60 in 5.8 seconds. The second model is the $58,000 M440i xDrive. Only available with AWD, it gets a turbocharged three-liter six with a 48-volt mild hybrid system. This engine develops a more healthy 382 horsepower and can get to 60 in just 4.4 seconds. Both models are hit with a $995 destination charge.

BMW says this new Gran Coupe is longer, lower, and wider than the one it replaces, as has been the case with pretty much every new BMW since forever. The model has always been a conundrum—something it shares with many other models from the blue and white roundel. Some may wonder why BMW choose to confusingly make a four-door model that’s based on a two-door model that’s based on a four-door model. But BMW says the long body, bigger backseat, and hatchback versatility of the Gran Coupe is popular with buyers. So a 3-series wagon, then?

The Gran Coupe gets an interior that’s essentially shared with the 4 Series coupe. The standard tech stuff you would expect from BMW is here. Things like cloud-based navigation, a ‘driver recorder’ that records exterior camera footage like a dashcam, plus the usual suite of safety and driver assistance systems. And while the 430i won’t be a slouch to drive, the M440i is where most will want to be. Adaptive M suspension along with M tuned sport brakes, variable steering and an M sport differential should make the M440i the one to get.

The 4 Series Gran Coupe Models go on sale this fall. So I guess if this is your thing, now is your chance to order one.

Would You Go $9,800 For This Widebody, Subaru-Powered 1972 Porsche 914?
Would You Go $9,800 For This Widebody, Subaru-Powered 1972 Porsche 914?
The styling of Porsche’s 914 was kind of frumpy, and the four cylinder editions were far from fast. Today’s custom 914 however is neither frumpy nor far from fast, but will its price have you saying eff that? There is something to be said for German engineering, and that something...

Every Single Vehicle We Reviewed In 2015
This past year it felt like we drove damn near everything. From Subaru rally cars to the Bentley Mulsanne Speed. From a Power Wheels to a McLaren 650S. From an Audi TT, to an Audi TT, to an Audi TT a third time, because sometimes we all disagree and everyone...

The Worst Cars (And Trucks, And Bikes, And Other Crap) We Drove In 2015
It was easy for us to name . Picking the worst ones, believe it or not, was a lot harder. We live in a great time to be driving cars. The sentiment that “there are no bad cars anymore” probably isn’t entirely true, but it is true that the real...

Simon and Garfunkel once sang that the boxer stands alone. In contrast, today’s Beemer is a boxer that will never make you ride alone. That’s because it comes with both a pillion and a space age side car, but will its price mean you’d just as soon leave it alone?...

The 2015 Mercedes-AMG C63 S Is Perfect Except For Three Things
Some things bear repeating. For instance, I tend to harp on about how value trumps price and that you shouldn’t ever settle for the mundane just because it’s technically the safer choice. As if to prove my point, the automotive gods at Mercedes-Benz have created the : the world’s most...

For $29,000, Will This 1974 Porsche 914 Bumblebee Start A Buzz?
Today’s 914 is the nirvana of the four-cylinder cars: two-litre, five speed, with the gauge pack. It’s also an unrestored, limited edition, with paint that earned it the nickname of Bumblebee. Might that just take away some of the sting of its price? Hey, do you remember 2015? I know...
