This All-Tesla Electric Race Car Series Just Got The Approval To Launch
This All-Tesla Electric Race Car Series Just Got The Approval To Launch-April 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:11:17

A new all-Tesla race car series has been officially sanctioned by the FIA, giving the go-ahead for races to start in mid-2018. Will it be slow and boring, or a touring car-style renaissance for EVs?

Called the Electric Production Car Series, up to 20 drivers will compete in tricked out Model S P100Ds , the series’ organizers.

Electric GT Holdings said it published regulations for the series, including a three-heat qualifying format. Rounds will have a 60-kilometer day race and a 60-kilometer dusk race. The modded Model S cars will be pushing out close to 800 HP during the races, according to the statement.

The organizers say a drifting competition will also take place at certain circuits, “where fans will see the top two finishing drivers plus two fan-voted drivers go head-to-head to complete a series of drifting challenges to secure three further championship points.”

There’s some more basic issues to iron out, as well, as s Sean O’Kane pointed out:

There are more practical and immediate hurdles it has to clear, too. I got to drive the prototype version of the EPCS’s Tesla racecar in November. It’s heavy as hell, but was fast and fun. And yet, it wasn’t able to last more than a few laps at a time.

Still, if you’re into to watching a bunch of Teslas whipping around a track, now you have something to look forward to. I’m eager to see where this leads.
