2024-02-19 EST 22:14:31

After a decade of development, the Air Force plans later this month the X-37B — a robotic spacecraft resembling a small space shuttle to conduct technology tests in orbit and then glide home to a California runway.

The ultimate purpose of the X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle and details about the craft, which has been passed between several government agencies, however, remain largely a mystery as it is prepared for launch April 19 from Cape Canaveral, Fla.

The X-37B, an adaptation of NASA and Boeing's old that started in 1999 (as a 120%-scaled derivative of ), is nearly , with a 14-foot, 11-inch wingspan. It could be used for intelligence gathering or delivering small satellites. For now, the Air Force says, the program objectives are "space experimentation, risk reduction and … development [of] reusable space vehicle technologies."

Although the length of the mission has yet to be determined the same Air Force spokesperson has said the vehicle has a requirement to be in-orbit for .

These Photos Of F-15s Flying Near Towering Forest Fires Are Totally Nuts
These spectacular images were taken by a friend of mine and fellow photographer, Jim "Hazy" Haseltine from the back of an Oregon Air National Guard F-15D belonging to the 173rd FW down in Klamath Falls, Oregon. The Eagle is the size of a tennis court, so seeing them absolutely dwarfed...

This Turbo Diesel Cafe Racer Is Powered By Bacon
Allow me to list some of the things I love: Motorcycles, turbos, diesel, and bacon. Through the wonders of Marketing, all of these things have coalesced into a diesel cafe racer that's making a cross-country trip powered by bacon grease. And yes, it smells like breakfast rolling down the road....

Harley Rider Crosses Creek With Wife And Kid, Laughs At Your ADV
Creek to ford? There are a slew of purpose built adventure bikes for the job. But just like the SUV that never leaves the suburbs, sometimes it's overkill, as this bagger-riding dad deftly demonstrates. We're not exactly sure where the creek-crossing took place, but with a KLR rider standing in...

Here Is A List Of Things Newer Than Kim Jong-Un's Submarine
Here's North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un, looking like the happiest boy in the world in his Romeo-class submarine. North Korea was assembling these noisy boats from kits up until as late as 1995, but the truth of the matter is, the Romeo-class design is pure 1950s Soviet vintage. A 1950s-era...
