You know what they say: cautions beget cautions. A caution called for minor contact involving Trevor Bayne, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Daniel Suarez resulted in one heck of a messy restart with 33 laps to go that took out numerous cars in the rear of the field.
Before the restart, Bayne’s tire went down, and Earnhardt didn’t slow enough for Suarez’s car in front of him before hitting it. Bayne came in for repairs but was able to make it back out, and both Suarez and Earnhardt were able to keep going. It wasn’t huge, but it was enough to cause a late-race caution.
That caution bunched up the cars, all of whom are now gunning for as good of a finish as possible at this point in the race. All that pent-up aggression resulted in a big ol’ wreck when the back of the field collided with each other at Turn 1.
Driver Clint Bowyer, who was taken out by the crash, called it “fucking stupid” (as overheard by NASCAR reporter ), which is accurate. It’s also kind of typical, to be honest.
Things can get pretty stupid when everybody wants to win at Talladega.
An eighth caution for the race was called shortly afterwards with the No. 23 of Joey Gase ate the wall hard on lap 164 of 188. We’ll see if we’re writing this story all over again shortly.
