Best Cars for Teens-September 2024
2023-12-14 EST 02:30:58

The moment your teen gets their driver’s license can be bittersweet. While it’s exciting to be officially relieved of chauffeur duties, it’s also frightening handing the keys over to a young driver. And for parents who choose to help their teen buy their first car, it can be difficult to find a safe and reliable car that falls within budget, especially in the current used car market.

To help parents find peace of mind, iSeeCars determined the safest and most reliable cars for teens across multiple vehicle categories for under $15,000 and $25,000. These cars achieved a score of 8.5 or above (out of 10) on an iSeeCars quality analysis that takes into account long-term reliability and the average safety ratings as a result of crash tests from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). While standard equipment and available advanced safety features vary across models and trim levels, the cars on this list have basic safety features like electronic stability control and front airbags. Additionally, the vehicles on this list have a combined MPG of over 20 to help minimize the amount of money new drivers will need to spend on gas.

If your teen has his or her heart set on a specific vehicle, and it doesn’t appear on this list, it might still be an excellent choice for a teen driver. High-value models like the Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima offer strong warranty coverage when new and can often be paired with a certified used warranty. Popular crossovers, including the Chevrolet Equinox, Hyundai Tucson, Nissan Rogue, and Toyota RAV4, provide a solid mix of utility, safety and fuel efficiency. And small cars like the Mazda 3, Toyota Corolla or Volkswagen Jetta can help young drivers avoid the pain of volatile gas prices.

Regardless of which specific model you may be considering for a teen driver, keep safety in mind and look for vehicles with five-star ratings from the NHTSA and Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS. You should also consider a car’s infotainment system and look for the most effective user interfaces to minimize driver distraction. Choosing an automatic transmission over a manual will also help a driver focus on the road. Finally, while many young drivers are drawn to sports cars like the Ford Mustang, the cost of car insurance for sub-25-year-old drivers will be considerably higher on sporty models.

Based on safety, reliability, and efficiency, here are the best cars for teens by vehicle category. The first list is for used cars under $15,000, the second list is for used cars under $25,000:

Teens and Car Insurance

As if the upfront cost of buying a new vehicle and the emotional toll weren’t enough, there’s also the cost of car insurance. You may get sticker shock when you hear about the cost to insure teen drivers, but there are discounts available to lessen the economic burden. Certain providers offer discounts for students who meet a certain grade point average, while others offer discounts to new drivers who complete a driving safety course. Providers also provide discounts if a car has certain advanced safety features, like automatic high beam headlights. Just like shopping for a car, be sure to shop around among multiple providers and inquire about the discounts they have available.

Important Safety Features to Protect Teen Drivers

When choosing a car for your teen driver, it’s important to consider a vehicle’s driver assistance features. Newer vehicles are more likely to have these advanced driver assistance features, but there are other safety features that are commonly found on older model vehicles. Here are the most important safety features to consider:

Electronic stability control (ESC):

Electronic stability control automatically applies the brakes when a vehicle skids or slides on slippery surfaces or curvy roads. This safety technology is so important that it has been required in most vehicles since 2012.

Rear vision cameras:

Rear vision cameras have been mandatory in new vehicles as of May 2018. However, this technology is also available in older vehicles.

Forward-collision warning with automatic braking:

This technology uses sensors to detect what’s in front of your car, along with your car’s speed. If a crash is imminent, it will give a warning. If you don’t stop on your own, the system will automatically apply the brakes.

Blind spot threat detection:

Blind spot detection uses sensors to alert drivers to vehicles that are not yet visible but are in adjacent lanes.

Bottom Line:

Having a teen driver can be worrisome, but the car buying experience doesn’t have to be. Whatever your vehicle preference, there are high-quality used vehicles to suit your needs for under $15,000 and $25,000. Making a good choice for a teen’s first vehicle purchase can provide much-needed peace-of-mind.
