BMW X1 First Look Review-January 2024

BMW X1

The second generation BMW X1 has been launched in India at the Auto Expo 2016. The new model is significantly different from the previous X1, offering more space and better performance. Also, for the first time, BMW is offering AWD with its entry-level crossover.

We have never been big fans of theX1 styling. It gets the standard BMW design with the kidney grille, but somehow it doesn’t seem proportionate. However, where the previous model came across as a station wagon, this one looks like a small SUV with increased height.

Inside of the X1 is now homely. The sporty undertones of the predecessor with full black theme have made way for liberal usage of beige. Even the variant with the M Sport pack has beige upholstery. The compact luxury SUV is now a front-wheel drive; this architecture has released lot of space in the cabin. Occupants at both the front and back have ample space, plus for short rides even three can sit abreast on the rear bench.

The cabin design hasn’t changed much compared to the bigger BMW models. It gets wooden insert in the dashboard and a rectangular screen for the infotainment system. The fit and finish quality compared to the previous model though is significantly better. The top-spec variant gets everything from navigation to panoramic sunroof. Six airbags, ABS and EBD are standard across all trims.

BMW is offering the new X1 with only one engine option – the 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel producing 190bhp and 400Nm of torque. It is coupled with the eight-speed ZF gearbox and now the power goes to the front wheels in the 2Wd models. It isn’t an ideal setup for driving dynamics, but Minis have always handled well despite using the same FWD architecture and this one is expected to turn out just fine. BMW is also offering AWD xDrive variants for the first time in India with this version.

The next-gen is available in four variants – the base two are 2WD, while the premium one come with AWD. It is priced in the range of Rs 29.90 lakh (ex-Delhi) to Rs 39.90 lakh. The company is accepting orders for the new entry-level luxury SUV through all its dealerships and the deliveries will begin in the first week of April. The BMW X1 will be assembled in India to compete with the Audi Q3 and the Mercedes-Benz GLA in the Indian market.
