Automakers aren’t perfect. Hold on, before you slap me, just hear me out: Quality control is generally damn good among modern carmakers, but mistakes still happen. Thankfully, they’re usually not big, dangerous mistakes, but more often something minor — and I suppose a bit embarrassing. Something like the thing that’s wrong with this 2022 Hyundai Tucson.

We were sent these photos by someone who works at a dealership, and I’ve taken the liberty of obscuring some of the background and other identifying elements to eliminate any unwanted blowback. But everything about the vehicle itself is unchanged.

See if you can spot what’s wrong with this 2022 Hyundai Tucson from these images:

Front quarter: The new ones look good! Hyundai is doing interesting things with camouflaging the lighting into the grille lately.

I can see a hint of the issue here.

...and now it’s on full display. Did you catch it?

If not, here, I’ll show you:

That’s not a Santa Fe!

Just to compare, here’s a 2022 Tucson butt and a 2022 Santa Fe rump:

They don’t even look that much alike. Their taillight designs are very different, and the model badges are even on opposite sides of the tailgate.

Checking Hyundai’s site, as you can see on the screenshot from the video walkaround, it looks like the Tucson badge is on the left there. So I guess it’s only reversed on the Euro ones.

Still. It’s the wrong name.

I’ve been to factories and seen how these sorts of adhesive-backed badges are applied; there’s a special jig used to make sure everything is aligned properly, which means that whoever slapped on this Santa Fe badge had to know something wasn’t right, I’d think.

Anyway, this is hardly a debilitating error, and if I were shopping for one of these I’d kind of want the misbadged one just to enjoy the mild confusion I’d sow among gearheads (at least the hyper-alert ones).

Plus, I’d try touse that to get the price down a bit. By like, $20.

At $7,000, Could This 1985 BMW 635CSi Turn You Into A Coupé Connoisseur?
If your motto has always been “go big or go home” then you’ll love today’s “big coupe” Bimmer. Let’s find out if this Teutonic two-door’s price tag is also kind of a big deal. Working on cars can be fun. I mean, if it’s not raining. Yesterday’s needed some...

I'm Looking For a Radwood-Style Car For The Occasional Track Day For Under $10,000! What Should I Buy?
Mike is looking for an inexpensive car that can handle some track days, but he wants a cool ride from the ‘80s or ‘90s. Ideally, it would have a manual and rear-wheel-drive, but he isn’t too picky. However, he doesn’t have a ton of cash to spend and #Radwood...

Would You Drop $249,900 On Carroll Shelby’s 1983 De Tomaso Pantera GTS?
Being a “one-owner” car holds special cachet in the used car market. Having that one owner be the late great Carroll Shelby as is the case of today’s Pantera turns that cachet into holy crap! Let’s see what being ‘Ol Shel’s car might just be worth. This past weekend...

As Jalopnik’s resident car buying expert and professional car shopper, I get emails. Lots of emails. I’ve decided to pick a few questions and try to help out. This week we are discussing why dealerships especially suck for women, the best off-lease sedans, and the choice between a new...

The 2019 Lincoln Navigator Is A Glorious Return To American Opulence
We never had kings or queens here in America. (Well, we did before we were our own country, but we showed those fools what we really thought of them.) If we did, though, they’d all be driving 2019 . The car is flush with splendor, rich with opulence and...

If You Are Going To Buy A Family Car, Don’t Forget The Family Part
People buy vehicles for all kinds of reasons. Some of them are rational, and some of them are emotional. There is nothing wrong with buying a car because it’s fast, or stylish, or it just makes you feel good when you drive it. However, when the primary objective is...
