F1 Is Allegedly Shaking Down Las Vegas Restaurants For Race View Access-November 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:10:45

Lewis Hamilton of Great Britain and Mercedes driving on track during the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix 2023 launch party on November 05, 2022 on the Las Vegas Strip in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Formula 1 World Championship is set to have a under floodlights and the colorful glow of casinos on the Strip this November. However, if you’re physically standing alongside , your view of the race could be obstructed. The championship’s commercial arm is flexing its muscle to force clubs and restaurants to pay eye-watering license fees for a view of the race.

reports Liberty Media, F1’s commercial rights holders, is threatening to block trackside venues’ view of the race circuit unless they pay a fee. The license fee is reportedly $1,500 multiplied by the venues’ total capacity under the fire code. A restaurant on the Strip able to host 1,000 patrons could have to pay a license fee of $1.5 million for even a little peep at the circuit.

The areas would be blocked by advertising signage or stanchions for the track lighting. Reportedly, representatives working for Renee Wilm, the Las Vegas Grand Prix CEO and Liberty Media’s chief legal officer, have even said that floodlight could be aimed at unlicensed areas to blind onlookers. A casino owner , “They are literally shaking people down saying they will obstruct views unless they pay them. It seems insane that they are asking money for a public event that is taking place in the streets.”

While Formula 1’s actions aren’t illegal, the financial burden would undoubtedly be passed from the clubs and restaurants to guests who didn’t buy and wanted to be near the event. Notably, the casinos already paying millions to officially sponsor , like the Venetian and Wynn, aren’t obligated to pay the license fee.

This Year's Force India Car Is Definitely The Ugliest Formula One Racer Yet
I am unable to agree with Raph’s rant about the from the other day. Complicated, intricately curved and folded aerodynamic bits are entirely my jam. Then Force India whipped out its new VJM10 with a penis-nosed front end that is truly the ghost of ugly F1 cars past. Oh, no....

Renault Will Race Its First All-New F1 Car Since 2012
This is the 2017 season Renault R.S.17. On the face of things, it replaces the 2016 R.S.16, but in a way it’s finally a successor to a car that made its debut five years ago. Behind every Formula One team name there are a couple old versions from previous owners....

You Should Rallycross A Volkswagen GTI
I rarely think of a as a dirt monster. It’s a car that always comes up in the context of tarmac shenanigans—track days, autocrosses, and general acts of on-road hooliganism. This assumption—fed by the low-profile tires and big, pretty wheels—is wrong. It’s downright amazing on dirt. held two glorious days...

Watch This Ford Mustang Wheelie The Entire Drag Strip And Still Win
Winning is great and all, but what you really want is to win with some style. This all went down at Lights Out 8 in south Georgia, as notes, with JR Pines at the wheel (yoke?) of the white New Edge Mustang, pulling a fair gap on the Fox Body...

The Acura NSX GT3 Looks Fast. How Fast? Real Fast
The Acura NSX GT3 Looks Fast. How Fast? Real Fast
You tend to think of race cars just in terms of how much faster or slower they are than other cars they’re competing against. Rarely do you get to think of their speed in isolation. With that in mind, get a load of how f’ing fast the new GT3-spec looks...
