For $15,000, This 1989 Toyota Tacoma Is Supra, Thanks For Asking-October 2024

Today's Tacoma rocks a turbo 2JZ from a Supra, among other go-faster mods. Will those improvements be enough to ensure that its price doesn't put prospective buyers in a coma?

You've surely heard the term hit the deck. Well, 82% of you took that literally, hitting yesterday's with a Crack Pipe loss. Not only that but I think a couple of you gave it a wedgie too, just for good measure. That'll teach Toyota about trying to be different!

Today's Nice Price or Crack Pipe contender is a one-off Toyota called an Opendeck that's like an…

Contrastingly, for today's contender, we have a… Toyota that's, well, a little different. This may look like something the gardner might rock, and in fact it seems a little rough around the hedges, but it hides a pretty sweet secret under its hood. That's a 2JZ straight six with a honkin' big turbo bolted onto it, which should make this Tacoma a truck that hauls ass.

Now, to be sure, this is that someone else's project that people have waned you to stay away from lest you catch incompetent assembly or some such nonesense. But keep in mind that people also warn you not to run with scissors, or stay up too late, or date people with neck tattoos. Look, if you keep listening to those yabbos you're never going to have any fun, or potentially end up rubbing the lotion on your skin in a dank hole in some interesting individual's basement.

Where were we? Oh yeah.

This truck is said to have been set up for the strip. Underneath its clever disguise as a contractor's ride it sports what's purported to be a full roll cage, racing fuel cell, and tramp bars on the rear axle. That back end also sports an LSD out of a Supra. Black-painted Mustang wheels wrapped in fat Lexanis hold the whole thing up, while a big ol' intercooler challenges parking berms.

Other bits of notable kit include a nitrous system, Wilwood brakes in front, what's described as a 'racing clutch,' and a 3-inch stainless exhaust system. That clutch is partnered with a W58 5-speed and if you can't get enough of that, the truck comes with a spare.

You may be saying to yourself, why would you put all that power into something that rests most of its weight on the non-driving wheels? Two words, my friends: sand and bags. Actually bags of concrete mix are good too. Throw a few of those in the back and it's action traction.

The other thing you might be asking yourself is how much does this fabulous drag stripper Tacoma cost? The seller is asking $15,000 for it, and he seems pretty adamant that tire kickers need not bother wasting his time.

What's your take on this fast Tacoma for $15,000? Is that a price that should have it soon doing quarters under new management? Or, is this a Supra-ized Tacoma that's got a Supra-sized asking price too?

You decide!
