For $33,000, Does This 1989 Isuzu Trooper Bighorn Irmscher R Turbo-Diesel Impress?-November 2024

Today’s Isuzu is truly a super Trooper: a JDM model modded by noted Opel better-er Irmscher Automobilbau GmbH. It’s probably the only one in the US, but will its price have you joining its troop of fans?

If you’ve ever slogged your way through the 400-plus pages of Frank Herbert’s Dune, then you’ll know that the only thing needed for interstellar travel is drugs. You’re also a nerd. NERD!

Many of you thought the seller of yesterday’s was high for asking its twelve-grand price. That resulted in an unfortunate 64% Crack Pipe loss for the car, a high from which it will be hard to come down.

I’d like you to think back a little farther if you will, all the way to last Friday. Back then we had a . Well this week, as Yoggi Barra once famously said, it’s deja vu all over again.

Here we have a , and that is a rare in the States 4x4 wagon with a turbo diesel and a five speed transmission. This attempted sale isn’t this Trooper’s first rodeo (get it?) as it seems to have been brought into this country with the exclusive purpose of being a flipper.

Now, you might have heard of Irmscher, the namesake German tuner of Günther Irmscher. It was founded in 1968 and has been noted for the work it’s done on assorted Opels and other makes. Back in the late ‘80s the company partnered with Isuzu (itself a noted modder of Opels!) to create what is arguably the most high-zoot and collectable edition of the first-gen Trooper there ever was or ever will be.

The mods making the Irmscher R included a hood scoop, special fat flares added to the fenders, a roo bar and lights up front, side steps, wheels and suspension modifications outside, as well as Recaro seats, industrial strength floor mats, and a Momo wheel on the inside.

This Trooper has all that and it all looks like someone took a toothbrush to every square inch, nut and bolt, and stitch as the truck appears completely spotless. Under the hood is Isuzu’s 2.8-litre 4JB1T turbo diesel four cylinder and backing that up is a five speed manual. Yep, just as you’d like it.

Not only that but it only has a claimed 22,800 miles on the clock and is said to be in nearly Mary Poppins level of practically perfect.

If you’ve joneses for a classic Land Cruiser or Jeep Grand Wagoner, then this might be the funky ride that pushes both of those more traditional choices out of the way.

Here’s the thing though: there’s another way in which this truck is like last Friday’s Land Rover, all the pics offered in the current Craigslist ad appear to be from a previous owner and from when the truck was sold by him in . You can find that eBay ad where it sold for $24,900. You can also see the boogers that original seller pointed out in this .

Okay so how much could have happened in the ensuing eight months? What Doc, did it turn out to be an asshole? Probably not, but it brings up a couple of points, one of which is could the car now be worth its asking price of $33,000, and secondly, couldn’t the present owner have taken a few new pics before trying to flip the car? Hey, maybe that eBay sale fell through and this is the original seller trying once again?

Whatever the dealio, the most important factor is that $33,000 price tag. What do you think, is this super rare Trooper in excellent (seeming) shape worth that? Or, is this possibly the case of a flipper who is flippin’ nuts?

You decide!

Atlanta , or go if the ad disappears.

H/T to Sam Gault for the hookup!

According to its seller, today’s Nissan 4X4 shows “pride of ownership.” Let’s see if it would take swallowing one’s pride to pay its asking price. Opinions were split on how well the design of yesterday’s has held up over the years. Some of you commented that the design still...
