I'll bet you woke up this morning thinking I wonder if Audi's 4.2 V8 would fit in a Porsche Boxster? Well, wonder no more early bird because today's '97 project Porsche proves it fits. Now you'll just need to wonder does its price fit too?
Okay, so I know that we've had a lot of W123s here the past few weeks, and I don't have a good explanation for that. Maybe I have some sort of Teutonic tourettes or something, but at any rate, yesterday's will be the last one for a while. Maybe. One thing you can be sure of, with ts 75% Crack Pipe loss, the price tag on this particular one means it won't be back here any time soon.
The livery trade can be cut throat, and you really need to find an edge to make a go of it. Today's
Let's stick with the Germans today - just, don't mention the war! - and take a look at a V8 Porsche. No, it's not a 928, nor a Renegade 911, hell, it's not even a Cayenne or Panamera. Nope, it's a Boxster, this particular having had the misfortune of seeing its original flat six get blown - and not in the manner of Sasha Grey's co-stars. Seeing as a lunched engine spoils the entire raison d'être of an automobile (meaning self-mobile), the owner of this blown Boxster has replaced the impotent six with a lusty 4.2 V8 from what he says was an Audi A8.
It should be noted that this is a PROJECT CAR, albeit one that the seller claims is 80% complete. Now, that's sort of like telling the cop that your back seat companion is 80% 18 years old- there's still going to be some ‘splainin to do. Still, it runs and there's even a video from which the shrinki-dink Craigslist pics were grabbed.
You can see that not only does the alloy eight fit in the tight confines of the Boxster's mid-located engine bay, but it looks like a bashful turtle in doing so. Now the seller doesn't say which 4.2 this is, and his claim of 320-bhp doesn't help. The eight-cylinder Audi mill came in a number of guises - some with 32-valves, others with a machine shop enriching 40, and power ratings were all over the place, from 275 from the early ABH to 340 from the later BBKs. Let's just marvel at the fact that it seems to fit, and hope this mixed marriage is more long lasting than the first incestuous pairing of Porsche engine and car.
Behind the Audi eight is what is claimed to be Porsche's Tiptronic gearbox. That's alright I guess as it gives the driver the choice of auto or manual shiftiness, but what isn't alright, and is downright WTF, is the fact that there are two shifters in the car. The console has the expected Tiptronic slap shifter, while just above that, sprouting from the dash like a gated Agaricomycete, is a second lever. The seller says it's like a ‘90s arcade game, by which I'm guessing he means you need to keep feeding the car coins to keep it going. At least it draws attention away from the gaping hole in the dash where the radio used to be.
In fact, that mutant shift combo is just one of a few questionable decisions evident on this car. Another is why the builder would go to the trouble of mating another make's engine with this Porsche, and yet couldn't be bothered to change out the headlamps which are as sallow as Lindsay Lohan's thighs. or, why he didn't bother to so much as wash the car before doing the video walk-around? Final question, and then I'm done, why is he selling the project car at this time, and why is he only asking $6,000 for it?
Okay, that was two questions, so sue me. But before you do, you need to weigh in on this claimed one of two ( is the other one) Audi 4.2-powered Boxsters, and its $6,000 price tag. What do you think, is that a pleasant price for a potentially potent project Porsche? Or, are you surprised this thing isn't being offered in Florida?
You decide!
