I’m going to go ahead and assume that if I say “GT3,” the first thing you picture in your mind is probably some , right? And I can almost guarantee that nowhere in there is floating around. Only that might change because Ford announced the Mustang GT3 race car on Friday at , and friends, it’s a banger.

The car is based on the and is set to compete in the FIA’s GT3 category (hence the name) starting next year. It’s powered by an M-Sport-built 5.4-liter Coyote V8 engine (which means it will sound bonkers at full song) as well as a bespoke short-long arm suspension, a rear transaxle, a carbon fiber body and a brand spanking new aero package (because racecar). Multimatic will be building and supporting the cars themselves.

“Ford and Le Mans are bound together by history. And now we’re coming back to the most dramatic, most rewarding and most important race in the world,” said Jim Farley, CEO of Ford Motor Company, in a statement. “It is not Ford versus Ferrari anymore. It is Ford versus everyone. Going back to Le Mans is the beginning of building a global motorsports business with Mustang, just like we are doing with Bronco and Raptor off-road.”

Ford already has a customer team signed up to take the Mustang GT3 racing, too. Proton Competition of Ehingen, Germany, will be campaigning a pair of the potent ponies next year, so we can look forward to hearing them howl around all of Europe’s best tracks. But wait, as they say, there’s more. Ford itself will run a pair of cars (with the Multimatic Motorsports folks) in IMSA’s GTD Pro, with the cars set to debut at Daytona in January.

BMW Is In On GT1 Discussions: Report
The only news in racing (as far as I’m concerned) is that this year Toyota, McLaren, Aston Martin, Ferrari and Ford are in talks to lay out a hypercar-looks/GT1-style class for Le Mans in 2020/2021. Now BMW is in on those talks, as reports. Hm. My initial thought was “oh...

Emails are hard. You’ve got like five accounts, full of news, people asking you to do stuff, annual reminders you set 10 years ago and can’t delete, spam, and offers from 53 retail stores when you remember deliberately not checking the “keep me updated with promos” box. It’s easy to...

Ferrari Has a New Contraption to Cover Up its Camera And I Love it
Formula One is definitively at its best when people are trying all sorts of crazy tricks. —that of covering up its cockpit camera usually used for television broadcasts—is either brilliant or hilariously dumb. Ferrari was ordered to stop it. It didn’t. So it was ordered to stop it again. It...

More Than 88,000 People Signed a Change.org Petition to Keep Kimi Raikkonen on the Ferrari F1 Team
Before the team it would trade 38-year-old out for younger driver this week, someone to keep him around on Change.org—the “web’s leading platform for social change,” as it calls itself. A valiant effort. The petition organizer argued Ferrari needs Raikkonen to keep the balance with current teammate Sebastian Vettel, and...
