Formula Drift Ferrari Catches Fire On Debut
Formula Drift Ferrari Catches Fire On Debut-March 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:11:16

The has been the most anticipated car to come to Formula Drift in years and, well, things didn’t go great on its debut. On its first round in its debut competition, it burst into flames.

“Fiorella” had already done a few demos, test days, practice and qualifying, but things only went south right after driver Federico Sceriffo initiated into his lead run against Chelsea DeNofa. (Not that the first lap was drama-free. On his initial chase run Sceriffo unfortunately hit DeNofa and punted him into the tire wall on the first turn at Long Beach.)

Federico locked up, DeNofa continued and by the time the camera panned back to his car, Fiorella was spewing fire.

Federico made it out of the car OK and appears very much uninjured, though he took a moment to shake his hands at the car before getting calmed down by an official.

Not long after fire crews came to put the whole thing out, not without some effort.

Hopefully Fiorella will survive this one and emerge from the ashes rebuilt. We’ll update the story if we hear more.

UPDATE: The reports that a knuckle broke on the Ferrari (that’s the part that the wheel mounts to), which then pinched some lines and started the fire.

Here’s a closeup of how the car sits. Looks fine to me!

The SCG 003 Was Too Loud To Race On The Nürburgring
While the Nürburgring Nordschleife is the last place I'd expect to have noise limits, there was one in place for the ill-fated VLN Race #1, where two of Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus' cars were racing this weekend. Both cars got black flags for noise. Turn down for what? It's hard to...

Here's What Happens When A Standing Start Goes Wrong
Yesterday's Pirelli World Challenge race started with a bang. Or, perhaps, a series of bangs. Turns out, not everyone just rockets off like Ryan Eversley on a standing start. Any stall or hesitation could be a total disaster. Several cars got collected in the opening melee yesterday, which led to...

NASCAR Admits That Daytona's Qualifying Was Terrible By Changing It
Even NASCAR that its qualifying format for the Daytona 500 this year was a mess, saying that the sanctioning body was "open to discussions" on how to improve it. Personally, I think Clint Bowyer . Anyway, they just changed their superspeedway qualifying format, hopefully for the better. Pack qualifying for...
