In this series of photographs from for Getty Images, we can see Mauricio Gugelmin in the Leyton House March Judd CG891 crashing at the start of the 1989 French Grand Prix. It’s a rare high-resolution view of a crash from Formula One’s past.
Gugelmin was fine, later rejoining the race and setting fastest lap.
It’s rare to see a crash from this vintage in such clarity. Here’s what video of the wreck looks like:

While F1 had not yet cured itself of killing drivers on track (which it has not in entirety), this was a very dramatic vision of how far safety had come already since the sport’s more fragile, deadly beginnings.
