The sun peeked out this afternoon just long enough to let the 2017 Formula One cars show their true speed on a dry track during Free Practice 2. Early in the session, Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton smashed the F1 track lap record with a ridiculously quick 1:34.668 lap time.
Hamilton has won at Circuit of the Americas four times before, so he certainly knows how to be fast here. He set a new pole position record in qualifying last year, so it’s not surprising to see him smash the record again.
What is insane is how early that record fell—right in the first part of Free Practice 2. If this is a fast practice lap, I can’t wait to see how insane the qualifying laps will be.
