McLaren Won’t Let Its Massive Indy 500 Failure Derail Its IndyCar Future
McLaren Won’t Let Its Massive Indy 500 Failure Derail Its IndyCar Future-January 2024

Fernando Alonso before being eliminated from the Indianapolis 500 in qualifying.

McLaren tried and failed, , to run the this year, from the wrong paint colorcausing the team to miss nearly two daysof track timeto mistakes in converting inches into the metric system. But that and its for the big race won’t derail its plans—whatever those may be.

The company, which came to the race this year along with Formula One star Fernando Alonso, wanted to use the Indy 500 to show what a future McLaren IndyCar program could look like. The team’s been talking about one, but has yet to give any details or commitments.

That mission to prove itself ended in McLaren for not bringing a good enough car,but reports that McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown said the team will “come back fighting” in IndyCar—in an as-of-yet undefined manner, to the rest of us:

While Brown says serious mistakes were made that need rectifying, he says the setback will not deter McLaren from returning to IndyCar.

“All the reasons why we think McLaren should be at Indy remain,” Brown said. “When you’re in racing, you’re going to have highs and lows. That was obviously a very significant low, the lowest point in my 25 years of motor racing. I think you have to dust yourself off, learn by your mistakes, and come back fighting. That’s what we intend to do.

“I think in racing, you lose races. This was a very high-profile loss, but we’re racers. You take risks. Hopefully you get it right more often than you get it wrong. [...]”

Racer reports that Brown used the line “when we go back” multiple times, and that it wouldn’t be fair to blame technical partner Carlin for its failure to qualify for the race. Brown said it was “clear that McLaren didn’t qualify because of McLaren issues,” which is .

“Would it have been different with a different partner?” Racer quoted Brown as saying. “I think given the mistakes that we made, I’m not sure anyone would have got us through those other than ourselves.”

It sounds like McLaren will have a chance to get itself through this problem, if it keeps on its current track to pursue an IndyCar program. The rest of us will just have to wait and see .

This Stupidly Strong Truck Might Bring 4WD Back To Off-Road Racing
This Stupidly Strong Truck Might Bring 4WD Back To Off-Road Racing
Contrary to what might sound logical, four-wheel drive is not ubiquitous in off-road racing. In fact most of the super hot race winners at an event like the Baja 1000 are rear-drive. But that might be starting to change, as builders are figuring out how to match 4WD systems with...

Onboard In Formula One's Old School Turbo Era
Onboard In Formula One's Old School Turbo Era
Current Formula One cars supposedly produce around 900 horsepower with 1.6-liter turbo V6s assisted by hybrid drive. Back in 1983 Renault made similar power with a turbocharged 1.5 liter V6 alone. This is future four-time world champion Alain Prost in a Renault RE40. It has an 880 horsepower evolution of...

Watch The Mortifying Pit Stop That Lost The Monaco Grand Prix
Daniel Ricciardo was doing so well at the Monaco Grand Prix. He claimed Red Bull’s first pole position since 2013, and his first at Monaco. He managed to keep his lead for much of the Monaco Grand Prix itself, where the narrow street circuit makes passes extremely hard. Then he...

The Hail Storm That Stopped The Nürburgring 24-Hour Race
A shut down this year’s Nürburgring 24-hour race just three laps in causing spins, crashes and chaos. Those of us watching live didn’t really get a good idea of just how wild the storm was until now. This video comes from spectators overlooking a corner on what seems to be...
