NASA Engineers Drift Lunar Electric Rovers
NASA Engineers Drift Lunar Electric Rovers-January 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:14:31

NASA Engineers put on a show for fans last week, hooning two brand-new in public. The Rover's 12 pivoting wheels allow it to drive "crab-style." That's NASA speak for sideways.

While we were doting over the monstrous new presidential limo dubbed "The Beast," NASA was busy…

The Lunar Electric Rover, which joined , was designed for future missions to the moon where its pressurized cabin would allow astronauts to explore huge distance free from encumbrance of bulky space suits. The LER weighs over 8,800 Lbs and its electric motors only allow it reach a top speed of 6.2 MPH. That's the same as the that travelled to the moon with Apollo 15 in 1971. But, unlike its distant ancestor, the new LER can travel up to 150 miles from the base ship and is capable of doubling as a solar storm shelter should astronauts encounter unexpected radiation from Solar Particle Events. Its oversized airlock is specially shielded for that purpose and can double as a sort lifeboat should anything else go wrong, sustaining two astronauts without their spacesuits for up to 72 hours.

Sadly, the future of the LER is in doubt. Created for the series of lunar missions given the green light during the Bush administration, budget cuts could for at least a decade.

NASA actually has a proud history of hoonage. This video from the Apollo 16 mission shows astronauts putting their rover through its initial shakedown tests. The first thing they did? See how fast it would go.

This Turbo Diesel Cafe Racer Is Powered By Bacon
Allow me to list some of the things I love: Motorcycles, turbos, diesel, and bacon. Through the wonders of Marketing, all of these things have coalesced into a diesel cafe racer that's making a cross-country trip powered by bacon grease. And yes, it smells like breakfast rolling down the road....

Incredible Aerial Footage From Russia's 'Aviadarts' Exercise
Aviadarts 2014 saw Russia host China and Belarus for a large scale aerial gunnery, navigation, formation and reconnaissance competition. Held in late May, and taking place near the cities of Voronezh and Lipetsk, and at the Pogonovo testing range, Russia broadened the exercise into a more elaborate international training competition...

Harley Rider Crosses Creek With Wife And Kid, Laughs At Your ADV
Creek to ford? There are a slew of purpose built adventure bikes for the job. But just like the SUV that never leaves the suburbs, sometimes it's overkill, as this bagger-riding dad deftly demonstrates. We're not exactly sure where the creek-crossing took place, but with a KLR rider standing in...

These Photos Of F-15s Flying Near Towering Forest Fires Are Totally Nuts
These spectacular images were taken by a friend of mine and fellow photographer, Jim "Hazy" Haseltine from the back of an Oregon Air National Guard F-15D belonging to the 173rd FW down in Klamath Falls, Oregon. The Eagle is the size of a tennis court, so seeing them absolutely dwarfed...

Here Is A List Of Things Newer Than Kim Jong-Un's Submarine
Here's North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un, looking like the happiest boy in the world in his Romeo-class submarine. North Korea was assembling these noisy boats from kits up until as late as 1995, but the truth of the matter is, the Romeo-class design is pure 1950s Soviet vintage. A 1950s-era...
