The first Elantra came out in 1990 and the car has since sold more than 6 million units. The newHyundaiElantra, now in its 5th generation, looks to build on these impressive sales which continues Hyundais fluidic sculpture styling, which was first seen in the ix35 SUV.
The styling of the new Hyundai Elantra has looks more refined and has more of a sporty feel. The roofline has been lowered, the wheel arches look more muscular and the new hexagonal grille is present, which leaves no doubt as to what vehicle brand you are looking at. Inside the car Hyundai have maintained the same refined look, with silver garnish on the crash pad and the console featuring a windblown shape. High-gloss black and metallic colours are used within the cabin which continues this theme and emphasis a feeling of technology.
Under the hood the new Hyundai Elantra comes with a choice of two petrol engines; the Nu 1.8 litre MPI D-CVVT and the 1.6 litre MPI D-CVVT. Both options are mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, with the option of an automatic 6-speed available in the 1.8 Nu engine.
The 1.8 litre 4-cylinder engine produces 110 kW of power at 6500 rpm with a peak torque of 178 Nm at 4700 rpm. The Nu 1.8 litre also has improved fuel efficiency, with a gain of 18% (Highway) compared to the previous Elantra. The fuel consumption in the 1.8 litre option clocks in at 6.5 litres/100km with the manual transmission and 7.1 litres/100km using the automatic transmission.
The 1.6 litre 4-cylinder engine produces 96 kW of power at 6300 rpm and a peak torque of 157 Nm at 4850 rpm. Fuel efficiency has also been improved in this option thanks to a Mechanical Lash Adjuster (MLA). The intake/exhaust manifold system has improved engine performance due to its structural design and has enhanced the durability. Fuel economy in this engine clocks in at 6.1 litres/100km.
