The 2018 G-Wagen Is Different And Mercedes Really Means It This Time
The 2018 G-Wagen Is Different And Mercedes Really Means It This Time-April 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:13:11

The angry, blocky Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen has been around in its current shape . Over the years its powertrains have changed, its interior’s been wrapped in different cloths, but it looks like 2018 will be the first major update the world’s roughest luxury “car” has had in a long, long time.

The G’s classically aggressive posture makes it popular with people looking to make a statement, and I have a feeling Mercedes is going to leave the vehicle’s basic brick shape intact. But official photos released by the company today confirm that the giant half-dash screen is being ported over to the big G, along with the same fancy vents Mercedes has in its cars now.

The seats look like they’re updated, too. And, oh yeah, you can tell by those side windows that the G-Class is still dialed in for those of you who are big fans of right angles.

The more I look at it, sheesh, the steering wheel and vents are almost jarring in their roundness in this stack of leather-wrapped Legos.

Mercifully, it looks like the G’s signature triple locking differentials are still in place (those three silver switches in the center stack) which makes me confident that this machine is probably still an animal off-road as long as it’s wearing the correct tires.

So far Mercedes has remained mum on what changes are being made to the G-Class’s exterior, or if any adjustments are being made to which engines you can get in which markets. Like we’ve already observed- squareness is obviously still going to be a big part of the design, but the company wouldn’t be teasing it out if it were exactly the same as today’s truck. I look forward to trying to pick out the differences when the new G makes its full debut.

Tupac's Badass Hummer Just Sold For A Whopping $337,144
Most used Hummers look like they’re demanding somewhere between , complete with a menagerie of custom options including an external public address system featuring three sirens, just sold for $337,144. It probably helps that its first owner was Tupac Shakur. Like any self-respecting Hummer H1 owner, Shakur wasn’t going to...

The New Jeep Wrangler's Roof May Do Three Things It's Never Done
The New Jeep Wrangler's Roof May Do Three Things It's Never Done
It seems almost certain that the new Jeep Wrangler will hang on to the model’s signature solid-axle off-road orientation and pretty much keep the styling we know and love. But now I’m hearing that the 2018 will have three roof configurations never seen on a stock Wrangler before. At the...

When You're Helping Someone Move But Actually You Hate Them
One of the worst pitfalls of pickup truck ownership? Every time “a friend” needs something moved, you’re on deck to doll out the favor. This guy won’t have that problem anymore. So we can’t really really tell if the person in this pickup is being vindictive or just oblivious, but...

Here's About How Much Sleeker The New 2018 Jeep Wrangler Will Be
We know the 2018 Jeep Wrangler (JL) will be sleeker than the current (JK) vehicle to pick up some fuel economy, but a solid spy shot of the prototype in profile has helped us extrapolate just about how dramatic the change will be. The new Jeep prototype as seen under...

Why It's So Hard To Sell A Camouflaged Jeep
Why It's So Hard To Sell A Camouflaged Jeep
The internet is full of trolls, idiots and people hocking old cars. Sometimes they all come together and hilarity ensues. File under “I laughed harder than I should admit.” But hey, that’s actually for a 4.0 stick-shift Wrangler even it if is the unloved square-faced variety. And the hunting camo...
