This Huge 1973 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight Holds Its Own Against A Stock Car
This Huge 1973 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight Holds Its Own Against A Stock Car-September 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:11:40

I have no shortage of love for the noble Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight. A 1988 version was the first car I got to drive around a parking lot when I was a kid. They’re big. They’re classy. And here’s one with a 455 cubic inch Oldsmobile big block holding its own around an oval next to a race-winning stock car.

Clearly, the stock car is set up better for turnin’ left, but tossing a big, softly sprung Oldsmobile around those turns is no small feat. However, this is Terry Gilomen’s 1973 Ninety-Eight Regency, and according to , it’s been extensively modified for horsepower, loudness and hilarity.

Naturally, the next step would be to enter it in spectator drags at the local circle track against that night’s Thunder car feature race winner. Conrad Jorgensen lined his race car up next to the Olds and was smoked by the big barge at the start, but started eating away the Ninety-Eight’s lead towards the end of their lap.

Ultimately, though, Jorgensen ran out of time. The Ninety-Eight won by a fender—a glorious, gigantic American fender.

I...I’ve got tears of joy here.

Give me a moment.

(yaaaaaaaaaaay)

Could this be my favorite sleeper ever? It’s pretty close to the in troll factor, but I may have to give the edge to the Ninety-Eight. As much as I love Oldsmobiles, nobody ever expects them...except maybe church and Luby’s. That’s probably for the best.
