Consumer Reports has released Toyota has overtaken its sister luxury brand to dominate the top spot in the rankings. Four of the top five spots in the rankings are now occupied by Japanese automakers. The exception is in third place, a position gained after jumping up ten spots compared to last year’s rankings. There are plenty of other interesting notes to take from the Consumer Reports’ Reliability Rankings.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the annual rankings, itself best describes how its reliability rankings are compiled:

“Our predicted reliability score is calculated on a 0-to-100-point scale, with the average rating falling between 41 and 60 points. For a brand to be ranked, we must have sufficient survey data for two or more models.”

“Every year, CR asks its members about problems they’ve had with their vehicles in the previous 12 months. This year, we gathered data on over 300,000 vehicles, from the 2000 to 2022 model years (with a few early-introduced 2023 model years), that address 17 trouble areas, including engine, transmission, in-car electronics, and more. We use that information to give reliability ratings for every major mainstream model.”

“Consumer Reports’ brand-level rankings are based on the average predicted reliability score for vehicles in the brand’s model lineup.”

It’s unsurprising to see Toyota take the top spots, with most of the manufacturer’s models scoring above average in predicted reliability. was the list’s most reliable model with a predicted reliability score of 96. The only Toyota model to score severely below average was Full-size pickup trucks were the least reliable vehicle category with an average score of 30.

There was a mixed showing from the U.S. domestic brands. Lincoln was the highest-ranking American domestic brand with its tenth-place ranking and the biggest mover over the past year. Consumer Reports attributed Lincoln’s 14-spot climb to the improvements made with the and SUVs. Meanwhile, Chevrolet dropped ten spots down to 20th, just over sister brand GMC. was noted among EV models that have had issues crop up in reports. Electric vehicles were the second-least reliable vehicle category.

As more time, money and resources get put into electric vehicle development, EVs are bound to get more reliable. Though, I’m not too sure about full-size pickup trucks on the other hand.

At $19,900, Might You Say G’Day to This 1990 Holden Commodore Maloo Ute?
Holden Caulfield is a literary character that you probably wouldn’t want to hang out with, as honestly, he’s kind of a dick. Today’s Commodore, on the other hand, is a Holden you might not mind getting to know, That is, if this Maloo is worth the Moolah. Squeak-ah, squeak-ah, squeak-ah…...

I Have a Small Fortune to Get Whatever I Want! What Car Should I Buy?
Kevin won a bet with his wife, and while the details of the wager are a mystery, the important part is that he is now going to spend some $200,000 to $300,000 on a seriously fast car. But he’s not sure which direction to go. What car should he buy?...

At $10,399, Is This 1988 Mazda RX7 Turbo II a Fitting Sequel to a Car That Never Was?
Sequels are often not as good as the original, but today’s RX7 Turbo II might prove to be a car that’s an exception. Let’s see if its price makes it just the ticket. I’m pretty sure that everyone is aware that Steve McQueen based his character in the movie Bullitt...

At $10,777, Is This 1989 Chrysler Conquest TSi a Captive Import That’ll Capture Your Heart?
Chrysler once had this thing with Mitsubishi that produced a slew of cars like today’s Conquest. Neither company is doing so hot now, but we still have their very hot offspring. Let’s see if its price at least brings the heat. Yesterday’s faced a daunting task. Not as quirky-classic as...

The 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback Made Me Give a Crap About a Corolla
The isn’t a soul-sucking anonymobile only to be bought by rational people who’ve never thought about cars in a way that makes them feel feelings. It’s not a driving enthusiast’s dream, either. But this hatch seems to have revived a long-lost something from Corollas past that made them universally appealing....
