As the world , Toyota keeps banging a different zero-emission drum: . Between the and hydrogen-powered concepts with or , the company clearly views hydrogen-powered vehicles as part of our automotive future. Incoming CEO Koji Sato, , seems to agree.

True, Toyota has introduced more electrification to its lineup — cars like the or — but its push towards EVs has thus far lagged behind other automakers of similar size. Sato intends to change that, with more attention paid to battery-powered vehicles, but it seems he isn’t willing to leave hydrogen behind.

, in which he talked about keeping hydrogen a “viable option” despite pushing an accelerated EV timeline. Yet, it seems he isn’t expecting consumers to keep up with Toyota’s big plans — when asked about targeted sales numbers, Sato replied, “We don’t have a very specific business goal at this time.”

Toyota’s status as a dominant automaker in the coming decades may depend on its zero-emissions plans. With more and more jurisdictions moving to at some future date, manufacturers will need new, advanced vehicles to fill in the gap. Yet Toyota’s commitment to splitting zero-emissions development between batteries and hydrogen may hamper its efforts. After all, only a tiny number of hydrogen refueling stations exist worldwide, and Toyota doesn’t want to foot the bill to change that. In Sato’s words, “It’s not that Toyota will take a proactive lead in making these investments.”

Hydrogen has long been a passion project of Toyota’s, and it seems that will continue under Sato’s tenure as CEO. But with the days of ICE vehicles drawing to a close, and the push towards EVs growing ever stronger, one has to wonder if Toyota’s barking up the wrong tree.

For $11,000, stay G-classy
Originally intended for the German military, Mercedes' G-Klasse has become the ultimate off-posuer for those of means. Today's '85 may - strangely enough- be Mustang-powered, but is its price too much to pony up? Yesterday's offered 130 ponies, and that, along with its fap-worthy Bertone lines, resplendent in its seemingly...

For $19,500, become the Alfa male — even if you’re a girl
Veloce. In Italian it means fast. You might think the Italians at Alfa Romeo have forgotten that word, so slow they have been in returning to the U.S. market. However, today's 2000 GTV proves you can still get an Alfa here pretty damn veloce. Well, Friday's short-lived dalliance with the...

Ronald Reagan once for trips around his California ranchero. Today's CJ8 may not be Ronnie's, but does its price make for good Reaganomics? Reagan has been practically beatified by his supporters, while those on the wanting side of the have/have-not gulf still consider him to having been somewhat the devil...

For $7,500, domo arigato, Mr. Cobrato
Cars that live long, unmolested lives are considered survivors. Some survive as icons of past glories, while others serve as cautionary tales of historical malfeasance. Today's Cobra II is a survivor, but will its price survive your scrutiny? In Popeye comics, the Jeep was a magical cat-like creature with a...

2012 Aston Martin Virage: First Drive
You'd think any car expected to muscle in between Aston Martin's debonair DB9 and its cinematic, covert-ops-ready DBS would have seriously sharp elbows. What the new lacks in elbows, however, it makes up for in bra-unhooking charm. Full disclosure: Aston Martin wanted us to drive the 2012 Virage (as well...
