Watch America's Wildest 4WD Race Live Here All Day
Watch America's Wildest 4WD Race Live Here All Day-October 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:11:16

The 2018 “Nitto Powered By Optima Batteries” is upon us, and that means that thousands of people have been camping, racing and generally going nuts for all things off-road out in California’s Johnson Valley this week. Today’s the title event, and you can watch it from wherever right now:

If that stream doesn’t work, try .

KOH is sort of the Super Bowl of the Ultra4 Race Series. Or at least, it’s the biggest spectacle in the sport and easily one of the most spectator friendly off-road racing events all year. If you already know about Ultra4 cars, you’ve seen the 40-inch tires, screaming V8s and badass scratch-built frame bodies that get flung over rough tracks all over the world.

If you’re still getting up to speed: Ultra4 cars are like Jeeps if Jeeps took the Capitan America serum and also put on Iron Man suits. Sorry, we were talking about The Avengers last night and that got stuck in my head.

Anyway, after thrash their personal vehicles through ridiculous obstacles, we now get to see some of the most elite off-road drivers drive, scramble, winch and bash their way across hundreds of miles of rocky desert.

Coverage officially starts at 7:30 a.m. pst on Feb. 9, with the race kicking off a half hour later and most likely running into the night for most competitors. And if you’re tentatively interested in following this sport a little more closely, the event’s organizers have made up a tidy little cheat sheet with all you really need to know:

Four racers have won KOH the past eight years, demonstrating that it takes a lot more than luck to be on the top step. Will one of them win again this year, or will a new King ascend to the throne? All Kings have returned in 2018 except for 2007 winner JR Reynolds.

Past winners:

2017- Shannon Campbell

2016- Erik Miller and Robert Ruggiero

2015- Randy Slawson and Michael Slawson

2014- Loren Healy and Casey Trujillo

2013- Randy Slawson and Michael Slawson

2012- Erik Miller and Robert Ruggiero

2011- Shannon Campbell

2010- Loren Healy and Rodney Woody

2009- Jason Scherer and Jason Berger

2008- Shannon Campbell

2007- JR Reynolds and Randy Slawson

Shannon Campbell is the only driver to win KOH three times. Scherer is the only King at KOH 2017 that hasn’t won the title twice. He finished 2nd in 2016. Healy and Slawson are the only two drivers to win KOH after having to qualify through the LCQ. Only one driver has won King of the Hammers in a single-seater with independent front suspension—Shannon Campbell.

Levi Shirley (#81), Wayland Campbell (#3), Bailey Campbell (#5), Bailey Cole (#4854), and Darian Gomez (#90)Levi Shirley and Wayland Campbell both never had an official win in the US before last yearDarian Gomez (#90): Had a great first Ultra4 season. There Will Be Racing On The Moon Soon
There Will Be Racing On The Moon Soon
Motorsport has infiltrated practically every corner of this planet, and has been around for as long as there have been motors. Hell, racing has been around far longer than cars have been, and it would make sense that racing will continue on into the future after humans expand outward...

When Rear-Engined Skodas Tore Up The 1981 Rally Acropolis
In the ‘80s, wasn’t a brand of Volkswagen rebadges, it was a little automaker from a Communist country that kept its motors in the back and its cars on the rally stage, even if they were never big contenders. I like that attitude. I like it a lot. In 1981,...
