Weekend Motorsports Roundup, April 26-27, 2014
Weekend Motorsports Roundup, April 26-27, 2014-April 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:11:50

Welcome to the Jalopnik Weekend Motorsports Roundup, where we let you know what's going on in the world of racing, where you can see it, and where you can talk about it all in one convenient place. Where else would you want to spend your weekend?

Formula One and NASCAR Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series both take a break this weekend, but there's still Sprint Cup and Indy. And while you may think that Sprint Cup and an Indy race in Alabama would just mean nothing but ovals, that couldn't be further from the truth.

That's because the Indy race in Alabama is at the Barber Motorsports Park, a tight little road course that was once even suggested a test track for the doomed USF1 team. And what makes it one of the more interesting race tracks, at least in America, is the way it undergoes elevation changes.

And no, I'm not talking about one little hill here or there. It's as if the entire course is caught in a state of flux, undulating through the bends. With all the weight of the car constantly shifting throughout the race, it definitely tests driver skill more than some other venues.

So watch it when you can.

The Daytona 500 Was A Fiery Blast
The Daytona 500 Was A Fiery Blast
After just 14 laps, there was a Big One, a , ending the race for several drivers, which I didn’t see because I wasn’t watching. But then there was a nearly six-hour weather delay, and by the time it restarted — not long after 9 p.m. — I was...

Early-Race Wreck Wipes Out A Quarter Of NASCAR's Daytona 500 Lineup
Early-Race Wreck Wipes Out A Quarter Of NASCAR's Daytona 500 Lineup
The Big One—that massive wreck that wipes out a good portion of the NASCAR field—is inevitable at a big track like Daytona International Speedway, but I don’t think anyone was expecting it to come so early or to wipe out so many cars. Yep—the Daytona 500's Big One came...

Roush Fenway Is Leading The Way Toward A Carbon-Neutral NASCAR
Roush Fenway Is Leading The Way Toward A Carbon-Neutral NASCAR
When you think of a motorsport team that could conceivably be carbon neutral, you probably first jump to something like a Formula E or Extreme E squad. When I say NASCAR, you probably think of big roaring pushrod V8s, pumping carbon and particulates into the air, not green initiatives....

Red Bull Is Finally Charting Its Own Formula 1 Destiny
Red Bull Is Finally Charting Its Own Formula 1 Destiny
In Formula 1, it almost doesn’t matter how good your chassis is if your power unit underperforms. Red Bull discovered this the hard way through the middle of the last decade and was only beginning to put the pieces together with Honda’s help over the past two seasons. But...

McLaren Looks Like It Could Be Fighting For Wins This Year
McLaren Looks Like It Could Be Fighting For Wins This Year
I’m sure at least some of this is emotionally charged, but I truly believe that McLaren really has its shit together in 2021. Despite recent pandemic-induced money troubles, the Papaya Orange team has a new engine supplier in Mercedes, a new sponsor in Gulf, a new championship-caliber driver in...

I Really Think Williams Can Start To Turn It Around This Year
I Really Think Williams Can Start To Turn It Around This Year
Williams Grand Prix Engineering had some real wild up and down times in Formula One across the 2010s. Despite showing some promise in 2014 and 2015 with Mercedes power at the start of the hybrid era, the team dug itself a hole and has thus far not been able...
