Weekend Motorsports Roundup, April 26-27, 2014
Weekend Motorsports Roundup, April 26-27, 2014-December 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:11:50

Welcome to the Jalopnik Weekend Motorsports Roundup, where we let you know what's going on in the world of racing, where you can see it, and where you can talk about it all in one convenient place. Where else would you want to spend your weekend?

Formula One and NASCAR Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series both take a break this weekend, but there's still Sprint Cup and Indy. And while you may think that Sprint Cup and an Indy race in Alabama would just mean nothing but ovals, that couldn't be further from the truth.

That's because the Indy race in Alabama is at the Barber Motorsports Park, a tight little road course that was once even suggested a test track for the doomed USF1 team. And what makes it one of the more interesting race tracks, at least in America, is the way it undergoes elevation changes.

And no, I'm not talking about one little hill here or there. It's as if the entire course is caught in a state of flux, undulating through the bends. With all the weight of the car constantly shifting throughout the race, it definitely tests driver skill more than some other venues.

So watch it when you can.

Best Band Name Ever Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. Drops Driver From Their Name
Two of Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s fans started a catchy dance-pop band called Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., a name which they kept with Dale Jr.’s blessing. Sadly, that era came to an end as they shorten the name to “JR JR” to avoid further confusion, but of their driver-centric name is...

IndyCar Driver Gets Flipped Off Like A Prius Hogging Two Lanes
You’d expect these gestures to be made at a slow Prius straddling two lanes—not an IndyCar. Ed Carpenter was not happy with IndyCar competitor Sage Karam after the Iowa Corn 300. Not happy at all. In fact, Carpenter was so mad at Karam that he shot over a single-fingered salute...

Look at this tight little pass. Look and marvel. This is how Kyle Busch got back on the lead lap after being stuck a lap behind. Busch was on fresh tires, but the leaders were not. Since Busch had more speed, he just threaded right on through and got back...

The 1000 Kilometers Of Palanga Is A Crazy Road Course With Freeway Exits
We have plenty of famous street circuits in racing, but I’ve never seen anything quite like the . It’s not just a street course. It’s a course made entirely out of a Lithuanian freeway, complete with off-ramps worked into the course design itself. Take a look at this bizarre race....

Amateur Drifting Is Tons Of Good, Sideways Fun
OppositeLock’s roflcopter went to go watch the Mt. Dew Kickstart Drift Series Event #3 and documented the event with tons of photos of sweet sideways action. Enjoy! And few of them even turned out pretty dang acceptable. I’ll post a few here as well as a link to… ...
