Weekend Motorsports Roundup, April 26-27, 2014-April 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:11:50

Welcome to the Jalopnik Weekend Motorsports Roundup, where we let you know what's going on in the world of racing, where you can see it, and where you can talk about it all in one convenient place. Where else would you want to spend your weekend?

Formula One and NASCAR Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series both take a break this weekend, but there's still Sprint Cup and Indy. And while you may think that Sprint Cup and an Indy race in Alabama would just mean nothing but ovals, that couldn't be further from the truth.

That's because the Indy race in Alabama is at the Barber Motorsports Park, a tight little road course that was once even suggested a test track for the doomed USF1 team. And what makes it one of the more interesting race tracks, at least in America, is the way it undergoes elevation changes.

And no, I'm not talking about one little hill here or there. It's as if the entire course is caught in a state of flux, undulating through the bends. With all the weight of the car constantly shifting throughout the race, it definitely tests driver skill more than some other venues.

So watch it when you can.

Heartbreak in unlikely cars today: Nico Rosberg’s Mercedes engine blew right up with two laps to go at the Italian Grand Prix. While it looked like it was powered by jets for a second, this meant that Rosberg had to retire out of the race. Now the team’s been called...

What Should Go Into Next Year's NASCAR Throwback Race?
NASCAR’s for the Southern 500 is one of the best one-offs I’ve ever seen in racing. Fans love the look back at the sport’s history, and it’s even prompted us to go down a rabbit hole browsing old photos of cool race cars. If this isn’t already going to be...

Savor And Behold This Supercut Of Cars Tapping The Wall At Darlington
Darlington is so known for being hard on cars that it even has a specific name for one of its more common forms of damage: the “Darlington Stripe.” Here’s a supercut of NASCAR race cars earning their stripes this weekend. You’re welcome. When a car just taps the wall enough...

This Is What It Feels Like When You Put Too Much Tabasco In Your Grits
Paul Menard tapped David Ragan’s car from behind during last night’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Bojangles’ Southern 500, sending Ragan’s car into the wall and leaving him with one fiery car-b-que afterwards. Ouch. Here’s how it happened: While there’s never a good time to have a car fire, I have to...

Mercedes Busted With Low Tire Pressures On Both F1 Cars, But Not Penalized
After , Formula One and Pirelli instituted limits on tire pressures. The minimum allowed on any car at Monza was 19.5 psi. To enforce this, an FIA delegate measured left rear tire pressures on the four front cars on the grid and found that both Mercedes’ tires were below the...

Sebastian Vettel Lays Down The Truth On Why F1 Needs A Monza Race
“If you take Monza away from the calendar for any shitty money reasons, you are basically ripping our hearts out,” Vettel said after the Italian Grand Prix. Can I get an amen? Aaaaaaamen. Preach it, Brother Vettel. Preach. The broadcasters apologized for Vettel’s salty language, but I don’t think his...
